ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1)(A) AND (7), AND 15(2)
THE A47 TRUNK ROAD (A1075 TOFTWOOD INTERCHANGE TO A1074 LONGWATER INTERCHANGE, NORFOLK) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIANS) ORDER 202_
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited(a) intends to make an Order on the A47 Trunk Road in the County of Norfolk to enable major works to upgrade the A47 to dual carriageway between North Tuddenham and Easton and all associated works, including general routine maintenance to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to last until August 2027, commencing on or after Monday 20 October 2025. The works would be carried out in phases using a combination of full carriageway and slip road closures, lay-by and footway closures, contraflow, narrow lanes, no overtaking, weight and width restrictions and lane closures. Temporary mandatory speed limits would be in force at times in the interest of safety.
The restrictions and prohibitions would be applied only to the extent that is necessary for particular works to be undertaken and would only apply during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs.
The effect of the Order on the A47 would be to –
impose no overtaking and a speed restriction for 24 hours daily, of
30 miles per hour, 40 miles per hour, 50 miles per hour, or 60 miles per hour between 1000 metres west of Mill Road overbridge to 525 metres east of Longwater Interchange overbridge.
close, at different times, the eastbound and westbound carriageways between Toftwood Interchange, Dereham and Longwater Interchange, Norwich, including all slip roads, side roads and lay-bys within that length.
A system of contraflow would be in operation at times (for 24 hours daily), on the eastbound and westbound carriageways –
from 1000 metres west of the Mill Road overbridge to 640 metres east of Fox Lane overbridge, and
from its junction with the western side of Easton Roundabout to a point 525 metres east of the centre point of Longwater Interchange overbridge.
Vehicles with an overall width exceeding 2.0 metres or operating weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes would be prohibited from entering the outside lane of the lengths of trunk road described at 1 above.
Diversions, for closures described at 2 above, would be for –
eastbound vehicles, with a width exceeding 2.0 metres or weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes, via the A10 at Hardwick Roundabout, King’s Lynn, the A134, A11, and the A47 at Thickthorn Roundabout, Norwich; westbound vice-versa, and
eastbound vehicles, below 2.0 metres width and a weight below 7.5 tonnes, via the A1065 at Fakenham Road Interchange, Swaffham, the A134, A11, and the A47 at Thickthorn Roundabout, Norwich; westbound vice-versa.
During the works all vehicles would be prohibited from making a U turn on the lengths of carriageway described at 2 above.
Pedestrians would be prohibited from using the A47 footway –
adjacent to the eastbound carriageway:
i. from 635 metres west of the eastern junction of The Street at Hockering to that junction,
ii. from its junction with the eastern junction of The Street at Hockering to its junction with Albatross Road, and
iii. its junction with the northwestern side of Honingham Roundabout to the centreline of its junction with Tavernham Road,
adjacent to the westbound carriageway from 90 metres east of its junction with Mattishall Lane to that junction, including the A47 crossing from The Street, and
crossing:
i. at the east side of Easton Roundabout from Church Lane to Dereham Road, and
ii. from Dog Lane to Ringland Lane.
Pedestrians requiring access would be escorted.
Diversion routes for local road closures would also be in place.
The temporary mandatory speed limits (which would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles) and closures (which would not apply to emergency service, traffic officer, winter maintenance or works vehicles) would be clearly indicated by traffic signs.
The Order would come into force on 20 October 2025 and may continue in force until the works detailed above have been completed.
