Essex – Multiple Temporary Road Closures due to Special Events and Utility Works
What is happening?

(Colchester Soap Box Race) (Special Event)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that Essex County Council in exercise of its powers under Section 16 (A-C) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended), has made the above Order to facilitate the Colchester Soap Box Race, Special Event.
Effect of the order:
1. To temporarily close the following length of road in the City of Colchester, to facilitate the Colchester Soap Box Race.

Nunns Road | Manned closure from the intersection of Short Cut Road to North Hill. Resident access to be maintained to homes. |
Northgate Street | Manned closure from the intersection of Short Cut Road to North Hill. |
Balkerne Gardens & Balkerne Passage | Manned closure from intersection of Church Street through to North Hill. |
2. To Temporarily suspend ‘The Essex County Council (High Street, Colchester) (Prohibition of Motor Vehicles) Order 2022’
3. To temporarily suspend ‘The Colchester Borough (Church Street, Colchester) (One-Way) Order 1984 to allow two-way traffic.
4. To temporarily suspend ‘The Essex County Council (West Stockwell Street, East Stockwell Street, Maidenburgh Street and George Street, Colchester) (No Entry and Revocation of a One-Way) Order 2022. This suspension only relates to West Stockwell Street, all other restrictions will still be enforced. This is suspended for vehicles associated with the event.
Alternative routes via:
North Hill Northbound – High Street, East Hill, Brook Street, Magdalen Street, Southway, Balkerne Hill, Middleborough.
North Hill Southbound (buses, taxis, private hires) – Middleborough, Balkerne Hill, Southway, Headgate, Headstreet.
The closures are scheduled to commence on 14 September 2025 for 1 day between the hours of 05:00 to 23:00 where appropriate signs are showing and weather permitting and is required to facilitate the Colchester Soap Box Race.
(Crown Street, Dedham)
(10k Running Event) (Special Event)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that Essex County Council in exercise of its powers under Section 16 A-C of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, has made the above Order to facilitate the Dedham 10k Running Event.
Effect of the order: To temporarily close Crown Street, Dedham in the City of Colchester, from its junction with Brook Street to its junction with East Lane.
The closure is scheduled to commence on 14 September 2025 for 1 day between the hours of 10:30am until 12:30pm or where appropriate signs are showing and weather permitting and is required to facilitate the Dedham 10k Running Event.
The alternative route will be via Castle Hill, East Lane, Long Road East, Manningtree Road, Brook Street and vice versa.
Access for emergency vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained at all times during the closure.
The Order will come into effect on 14 September 2025 and may continue in force for 3 days unless extended by the Secretary of State.
(Compton Road, Colchester)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council intends, not less than seven days from the date of this notice, to make the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order: To temporarily close that length of Compton Road, Colchester in the City of Colchester, from its junction with Ipswich Road for a distance of approximately 30m in a south easterly direction.
The closure is scheduled to commence on 8th October 2025 for 1 day, or where stated on a valid permit (AD03766285090/SM/1 – Anglian Water). The scheduled dates may vary for these works with appropriate signs showing and/or displayed on one.network. The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce while excavation works are undertaken by Anglian Water.
An alternative route is available via St Annes Road, Dilbridge Road West and vice versa.
The Order will come into effect on 18th September 2025 and may continue in force for 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.
(Holly Lane, Great Horkesley)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council intends, not less than seven days from the date of this notice, to make the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order: To temporarily close that length of Holly Lane, Great Horkesley in the City of Colchester, from its junction with Boxted Road for a distance of approximately 230m in a north easterly direction.
The closure is scheduled to commence on 8th October 2025 for 2 days, or where stated on a valid permit (KA140RFSI1773467–RC – Gigaclear).
The scheduled dates may vary for these works with appropriate signs showing and/or displayed on one.network.
The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce while new duct lay works are undertaken by Gigaclear.
An alternative route is available via Holly Lane, Boxted Church Road, A134, Boxted Road and vice versa.
The Order will come into effect on 18th September 2025 and may continue in force for 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.
(School Road, Little Horkesley)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council intends, not less than seven days from the date of this notice, to make the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order: To temporarily close that length of School Road, Little Horkesley in the City of Colchester, from its junction with Holts Road to its junction with Horkesley Road a distance of approximately 1330m.
The closure is scheduled to commence on 9th October 2025 for 5 days, or where stated on a valid permit (EP201EH2387835 – Essex County Council).
The scheduled dates may vary for these works with appropriate signs showing and/or displayed on one.network.
The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce while drainage works are undertaken by Essex County Council.
An alternative route is available via Holts Road, Workhouse Road, Vinesse Road and vice versa.
The Order will come into effect on 18th September 2025 and may continue in force for 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.
(Chitts Hill, West Bergholt)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council has made the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order: To temporarily close that length of Chitts Hill, West Bergholt in the City of Colchester, from its junction with Argents Lane to its junction with Cooks Lane a distance of approximately 835m. The closure is scheduled to commence on 22nd September 2025 for 9 days, or where stated on a valid permit (EP201EH2386876 – Essex County Council).
The scheduled dates may vary for these works with appropriate signs showing and/or displayed on one.network.
The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce while drainage works are undertaken by Essex County Council.
An alternative route is available via Chitts Hill, Halstead Road, A1124, Spring Lane, Argents Lane and vice versa.
The Order came into effect on 4th September 2025 and may continue in force for 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.
(East Street/Harwich Road, Colchester)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council intends, not less than seven days from the date of this notice, to make the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order: To temporarily close that length of East Street/Harwich Road, Colchester in the City of Colchester:
1. East Street – from its junction with Mooridge for a distance of approximately 20m in a south easterly direction.
2. Harwich Road – from its junction with Greenstead Road for a distance of approximately 20m in a north westerly direction.
The closure is scheduled to commence on 28th September 2025 (01:30–06:30) for 1 night, or where stated on a valid permit (KL735COC-53-13-280925 – Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd).
The scheduled dates may vary for these works with appropriate signs showing and/or displayed on one.network.
The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce while 1 night’s works – level crossing inspection works are undertaken by Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd.
An alternative route is available via East St – Ipswich Rd – St Andrew’s Ave/A133 – Harwich Rd – East St and vice versa.
The Order came into effect on 4th September 2025 and may continue in force for 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.
(Hythe Station Road, Colchester)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council intends, not less than seven days from the date of this notice, to make the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order: To temporarily close that length of Hythe Station Road, Colchester in the City of Colchester, from its junction with Hawkins Road for a distance of approximately 45m in a south westerly direction.
The closure is scheduled to commence on 22nd September 2025 for 5 days, or where stated on a valid permit (AD02310759297 – Anglian Water).
The scheduled dates may vary for these works with appropriate signs showing and/or displayed on one.network.
The closure is required for the safety of the public and workforce while new connection works are undertaken by Anglian Water.
An alternative route is available via A134, Eastern Approach, Elmstead Road, Greenstead Road and vice versa.
(With access only into Hythe Station Road).
The Order came into effect on 4th September 2025 and may continue in force for 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.
(Queen Street & St Botolphs Street, Colchester)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) & (High Street, Colchester)
(Temporary Closure of Bus Lane) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council has made the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order:
1. To temporarily close that length of Queen Street & St Botolphs Street, Colchester in the City of Colchester, from the junction of High Street to the junction of Priory Street a distance of approximately 240m.
2. To temporarily close the bus lane in that length of High Street, Colchester in the City of Colchester, from a point approximately 90m east of its junction with St Nicholas Street to its junction with Queen Street a distance of approximately 50m.
The closures are scheduled to commence on 22nd September 2025 for 2 nights (23:00–06:00), or where stated on a valid permit (AD03010587836/01, 02 & 03 – Anglian Water).
The scheduled dates may vary for these works with appropriate signs showing and/or displayed on one.network.
The closures are required for the safety of the public and workforce while remedial works are undertaken by Anglian Water.
An alternative route is available via High Street, East Hill, Brook Street, A134 (with access only into Queen Street, St Botolphs Street).
The Order came into effect on 4th September 2025 and may continue in force for 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.
(Various Roads, District of Tendring)
(Temporary Prohibition of Traffic & Temporary Introduction of a Clearway)
(No.10) Order 2025
Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council has made the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order:
1. To temporarily close those lengths of road in the District of Tendring as specified in the Schedule.
2. A temporary ‘No Waiting, No Loading and No Stopping’ restriction will be introduced on both sides of the carriageway on the above lengths of road, for the duration of the closures to facilitate the works. Signs will be installed indicating when the No Waiting restriction will be in force.
“The Essex County Council (Tendring District) (Prohibition of Waiting, Loading and Stopping) and (On Street Parking Places) (Civil Enforcement Area) Consolidation Order 2019” will be temporarily amended to include the temporary ‘No Waiting, No Loading and No Stopping at Any Time’ restriction and suspend any existing parking and waiting restrictions on the above lengths of roads only. All other restrictions and exemptions contained in the aforementioned Order and Amendments to that Order shall remain in force.
The works being undertaken will take place within an 18-month period from 4th September 2025; exact dates will be specified on One.Network. The roads will be closed to facilitate each phase of works and then re-opened to the public.
Access will be maintained for emergency services. Diversion routes will be signed at each location and residents will be informed of the dates of each phase via letter/leaflet drop and advanced warning signs on the road.

Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council has made the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
Effect of the order:
1. To temporarily close those lengths of road in the City of Colchester as specified in the schedule.
