Abingdon, Temporary Road Closures & Traffic Restrictions For Abingdon Michaelmas Fair

What is happening?

OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

(ABINGDON MICHAELMAS FAIR) (SPECIAL EVENT) ORDER 2025

NOTICE is hereby given that on the 29 September Oxfordshire County Council proposes to make the above order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This order is being introduced to facilitate the holding of the annual Abingdon Michaelmas Fair which is promoted by Abingdon Town Council, and the County Council is satisfied that it is appropriate for the events to take place on public roads.

The effect of the Order is that restrictions will be in place from 7.00am on Sunday 5 October to 9.00am on Wednesday 8 October as follows:

1. Prohibit vehicles from using the following lengths of road:

  • Market Place, High Street and The Square – from the junction with Stert Street/Bridge Street to its junction with Ock Street.

  • Ock Street – from The Square to Drayton Road/Spring Road junction between 12:00hrs & 24:00hrs daily. Access permitted between 24:00hrs and 12:00hrs.

  • Stratton Way – from its junction with Ock Street to its junction with Bath Street 12:00hrs to 24:00hrs daily. Access permitted between 24:00hrs and 12:00hrs.

  • West St. Helen Street – from its junction with High Street to its junction with Lombard Street.

2. Prohibition of waiting in:

  • Bostock Road – both sides, between Conduit Road and Victoria Road

  • Edward Street – north side, between Victoria Road and Spring Road

  • Victoria Road – west side, from a point 40 metres north of its junction with Ock Street to its junction with Exbourne Road

  • Spring Road – west side, between its junctions with A415 Marcham Road and Faringdon Road.

(i) Lombard Street Impose one-way traffic in the direction west to east; and

(ii) reverse the one-way traffic flow (vehicles under 7.5t) across St. Helen’s Wharf Bridge to become east to west, except for cycles which will be permitted to pass in either direction.

Temporarily suspend No Right Turn so as to allow traffic to turn from Stratton Way into Bath Street to assist in the diversionary routes.

A temporary prohibition of vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes (except for Public Service Vehicles) will operate when entering Abingdon northwards via the A415 Abingdon Bridge; also southwards at the Oxford Road roundabout; southwards at the Wootton Road roundabout; and westwards at the Radley Road from the Audlett Drive roundabout.

The alternative route for southbound traffic will be via Wootton Road, Faringdon Road, Spring Road and Drayton Road/Marcham Road. For north and westbound traffic it will be via East St Helen Street, St Helen’s Wharf, Caldecott Road, Drayton Road, Marcham Road and Colwell Drive.

There will be an alternative through route for light traffic (not exceeding 7.5t maximum gross weight) to south Abingdon via Bridge Street, East St. Helen Street, St. Helen’s Wharf Bridge, Caldecott Road, Preston Road, Drayton Road and Marcham Road.

Exemptions are included for emergency services and for emergency works to highways and utility services in or adjoining the closed lengths of roads.

The Oxfordshire County Council (St Helen’s Wharf Bridge, Abingdon) (One-Way Traffic) Order 1979 will be temporarily suspended.
