A1 Trunk Road - Temporary Prohibition of Traffic For Carriageway Patching Works

What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14
THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (JUNCTION 73 TO JUNCTION 70)
(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the Borough of Gateshead, to enable carriageway patching works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Tuesday 30 September 2025 for 1 night or until completed.

The effect of the Order will be, between 10pm and 6am, at times during the works, to close the A1:

(i) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 73 (Blaydon) to the entry slip road at Junction 70 (Dunston), a distance of 3360 metres;

(ii) southbound entry slip road at Junction 73;

(iii) southbound entry slip road at Junction 72 (Swalwell); and

(iv) southbound entry slip road at Junction 71 (Metro Centre).

During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.

Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance). The Order comes into force on 29 September 2025 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
