Durham, Temporary Road Closures Due To Carriageway Resurfacing Works

What is happening?

THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF DURHAM (ATHERTON STREET, EAST ATHERTON STREET AND NEW STREET, DURHAM) (TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE) ORDER 2025

The Council on 20/6/2025 made the above Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road. Atherton Street An 85 metre length of Atherton Street that extends northwards from its junction with Allergate; East Atherton Street A 72 metre length of East Atherton Street that extends eastwards from its junction with Atherton Street; New Street. An 85 metre length of New Street that extends eastwards from its junction with rear Atherton and Mitchell Streets and also a 58 metre length extending south to East Atherton Street to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken.

There is no alternative route available to vehicular traffic but emergency service vehicle access will be available should the need arise.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works commenced on 30/6/2025 and have been partially completed, it has however been necessary to further extend the works to complete the section of highway in bold above. The extended works will commence on 26/8/2025 and are anticipated to be completed in 3-4 weeks, between 9.30am-3.30pm. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
