A40, Ross-on-Wye to Wales Border – Temporary Restrictions due to Repair Works

THE A40 TRUNK ROAD

(ROSS-ON-WYE TO THE ENGLAND/WALES BORDER, HEREFORDSHIRE)

(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 9346363) intends to revoke an existing order and make a new order on the A40 Trunk Road between Ross-on-Wye and the England/Wales border in the County of Herefordshire, to enable verge and embankment repair works to be carried out.

The effect of the Order, will be to, at different times –

(1) impose a 40 miles per hour speed limit on the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the A40 between a point 460 metres northeast of the centreline of Talybont Lane underbridge near Ganarew, and the England/Wales border;

(2) close –

(a) the westbound carriageway of the A40 from its junction with the B4164 at Whitchurch, to the England/Wales border; and

(b) the eastbound carriageway of the A40 from the England/Wales border, to its junction with the unnamed road at Ganarew, 1500 metres northeast of that border;

(3) close the eastbound carriageway of the A40 from the England/Wales border, to a point 865 metres northeast of that border and allow traffic to use lane two of the westbound carriageway in a contraflow manner;

(4) prohibit any vehicle with an overall width exceeding 2.9 metres from entering or proceeding on the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the A40 between its roundabout junction with the A449, Ledbury Road and Netherton Road at Ross-on-Wye, and the England/Wales border;

(5) prohibit any vehicle from overtaking a moving vehicle on the westbound carriageway of the A40 from a point 865 metres northeast of the England/Wales border, to that border, when contraflow is in operation;

(6) prohibit pedestrians or cyclists from entering or proceeding on –

(a) the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the A40 between the England/Wales border and a point 865 metres northeast of that border, and

(b) any footway or verge adjacent to the lengths of A40 described in (6)(a) above.

The work started on Monday 30 September 2024 and is expected to continue for a further seven months. The work will be carried out during overnight closures between 20:00 hours and 06:00 hours. The speed restriction, width restriction, contraflow, pedestrian and cyclist prohibitions will be in operation 24 hours per day, for the duration of works. The Order will come into force on 1 September 2025 and will remain in force until the works are completed or until 22 March 2026 whichever is the sooner.

Any vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restrictions and closures. Special forces vehicles will be exempt from the speed restrictions and vehicles being used in connection with the works or for winter maintenance purposes will be exempt from the closures. Pedestrians engaged in police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance activities, activities connected with the works or for winter maintenance purposes will be exempt from the closures.

Diversion routes via the A40/A465/A49 for non-motorway traffic and via the A449, the M4, the M5, the A40 and vice versa will be signed. During the contraflow phase abnormal/wide loads exceeding 2.9 metres will be directed to use the A449/M4/M5/A40 diversion. Cyclists should follow the A466 (Wye Bridge)/Route 423 of the National Cycle Network/Biblins Rope Bridge/through The Doward to reach Ganarew.
