What is happening?

NOTICE OF PUBLIC PATH AND DEFINITIVE MAP & STATEMENT MODIFICATION ORDERS 2025

SECTIONS 26, 118 & 119 HIGHWAYS ACT 1980

SECTION 53A(2) WILDLIFE & COUNTRYSIDE ACT 1981

DIVERSION OF BRIDLEWAY BETWEEN FAR EASEDALE AND ROSTHWHAITE, WITH ASSOCIATED EXTINGUISHMENTS AND CREATIONS, LAKES: GRASMERE, ST JOHN’S CASTLERIGG AND WYTHBURN, AND BORROWDALE PARISHES

The above orders made on 24 July 2025 will divert sections of public bridleway numbered 542014, 249041 and 212021 between Far Easedale, Lakes: Grasmere Parish and Rosthwaite, Borrowdale Parish, to the pitched, surfaced and well-used path to ensure that the legal maps more accurately reflect the situation on the ground.

In order that linking rights of way terminate on the diverted bridleway, the orders will end footpaths 542044 (Lakes: Grasmere) and 212027 (Borrowdale), and extinguish short stretches of footpaths 542012 (Lakes: Grasmere), 542037 (Lakes: Grasmere) and 249074 (St John’s, Castlerigg & Wythburn) so that they terminate on the newly diverted bridleway.

The order will divert bridleway 542014 (Lakes: Grasmere) to the new routes described below:

  • Between Point A: NY 3219 0894 and Point B: NY 3214 0898 around 11m to the south-west for 70m

  • Between Point C: NY 3188 0933 and Point D: NY 3173 0935 around 24m to the north then south for 175m through the field

  • Between Point J: NY 3160 0944 and Point K: NY 3150 0955 around 8m to the west for 170m

  • Between Point L: NY 3145 0964 and Point M: NY 3064 0981 around 5–15m on varying sides of the definitive line for 885m

  • Between Point N: NY 3019 0989 and Point Q: NY 3006 0995 less than 10m to varying sides of the definitive line for 213m

  • Between Point R: NY 2999 0994 and Point S: NY 2996 0994 6m to the south for 23m

  • Between Point T: NY 2980 1002 and Point U: NY 2969 1016 less than 7m to varying sides of the definitive line for 212m

  • Between Point V: NY 2960 1023 and Point X: NY 2956 1027 60m to the north of the definitive line for 64m

The order will divert bridleway 249041 (St John’s, Castlerigg & Wythburn) and 212021 (Borrowdale) to the new routes described below:

  • Between Point X: NY 2956 1027 and Point KK: NY 2836 1120 to the north, then south, then north and east, then west for a maximum of 140m away from the definitive line, more generally around 50m for a distance of 1,800m

The order will divert bridleway 212021 (Borrowdale) to the new route described below:

  • Between Point HH: NY 2823 1147 and Point LL: NY 2828 1134 17m to the west for 105m

  • Between Point MM: NY 2826 1147 and Point NN: NY 2810 1202 east of and approximately west of the definitive line to a maximum of 60m for 819m

The order will divert bridleway 212025

Between Point QQ: NY 2743 1299 and Point SS: NY 2743 1301 for 30m to join with newly diverted bridleway 212021

The order will create a public footpath FP 542044 (Lakes: Grasmere) from the newly diverted bridleway 542014 for a length of 33 metres between Point D: NY 3185 0936 and Point E: NY 3183 0936 across the footbridge at Styhead Steps

The order will extend public footpath FP 212027 (Borrowdale) for 22 metres from Point FF: NY 2855 1042 to Point DD: NY 2856 1055 on the newly created bridleway 212021.

The order will extinguish:

  • 6m of Public Footpath 542012 (Lakes: Grasmere) between Point G: NY 3177 0935 and Point F: NY 3178 0936 so that it terminates on the newly diverted Bridleway 542014

  • 71m of Public Footpath 542037 (Lakes: Grasmere)/249074 (St John’s, Castlerigg & Wythburn) between Point X: NY 2956 1027 and Point Y: NY 2952 1021 so that it terminates on the newly bridleway 249041

  • 27m of Public Footpath 249051 between BB NY 2859 1053 and Point EE NY 2856 1052 so that it terminates on newly diverted Bridleway 249041

Any representations about, or objections to, the order should be sent in writing to Rights of Way at the above (LDNPA) address to charlotte.kimber@lakedistrict.gov.uk to arrive no later than 11th September 2025.

Please note, if all representations are withdrawn, we may confirm an unopposed order. If not, it will be submitted to the Secretary of State for confirmation. We may include any outstanding representations and objections.
