CARRIAGEWAY AND SLIP ROADS)
(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 09346363) has made an Order on the M6 Motorway, in the Boroughs of Wigan and St Helens, in the Counties of Greater Manchester and Merseyside, to enable handrail renewal and concrete repair works by Network Rail to be carried out in safety.
The Order will ban all traffic on the following sections of the M6 Motorway:
i. the northbound carriageway, from the last point at which the exit slip road leaves the carriageway at J23, to the first point at which the entry slip road joins the carriageway at J26;
ii. the northbound entry slip road at J23; iii. the northbound entry slip road at J24; iv. the northbound exit slip road at J25; v. the northbound exit slip road at J26; vi. the emergency refuge area adjacent to the northbound carriageway, located 1,050 metres north of the entry slip road at J23;
vii. the emergency refuge area adjacent to the northbound carriageway, located 623 metres south of the entry slip road at J24;
viii. the emergency refuge area adjacent to the northbound carriageway, located 844 metres north of the entry slip road at J24;
ix. the emergency refuge area adjacent to the northbound carriageway, located 830 metres north of the exit slip road at J25;
x. the emergency refuge area adjacent to the northbound carriageway, located 163 metres south of the Pemberton Road Bridge;
xi. the emergency refuge area adjacent to the northbound carriageway, located 800 metres south of the exit slip road at J26.
The prohibitions are expected to be in place overnight between 21:00 and 06:00 during a period starting on Saturday 30 August 2025 and ending on Friday 5 September 2025.
However, works may start and continue between the same times on subsequent nights, or until completed.
Diversion routes via alternative junctions of the M6 Motorway and local roads will be well signed. The prohibitions will not apply to emergency services, works, or traffic officer vehicles. The prohibitions will only apply during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs. The Order comes into force on 29 August 2025 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months. For further information contact
