Saddler Street, Temporary Road Closure & Suspension Of Access For Engineering Works
What is happening?
THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF DURHAM (SADDLER STREET AREA, BISHOP AUCKLAND) (TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE AND SUSPENSION OF LIMITED ACCESS) ORDER 2025
The Council on 10/1/2025 made the above Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit and restrict all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road. A 163 metre length of Saddler Street between George Street and the A689 Roundabout, Bishop Auckland. This will be phased to maintain access to Saddler House, and to the rear of properties on Tenters Street.
It will also be necessary to suspend Schedule 1.1 relative to Article 4 of the County of Durham (Bishop Auckland Bus Station)(Traffic Regulation) Order 1984 detailing the one-way restriction on Saddler Street between George Street and the A689 roundabout and Schedule 4 relative to Article 3 of the County of Council of (Bishop Auckland Town Centre)(Traffic Management) Order 2005 (Amendment No.1) Order 2017 to permit traffic other than buses to travel from Tenters Street to Newgate Street.
It will also be necessary to lift the temporary restriction on George Street as detailed in the County Council of Durham (Newgate, Tenters and George Streets, Bishop Auckland) (Temporary Prohibition of Driving, Prohibition of waiting/Loading/Unloading, Suspension of Parking Bays) Order 2023 to permit egress from Saddler House and the rear of Properties on Tenters Street (this restriction may be re-introduced at a later date) to enable highway engineering works to be undertaken.
An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from the eastern side of the closure, from Saddler Street, easterly onto George Street, south onto Tenters Street, east onto Newgate Street, south to the A689, west to Princes Street Roundabout then north on the A689, to the junction leading to Tenters Street, or continuing to the roundabout leading to Saddler Street and access to Saddler Street, to the western side of the closure.
The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works which commenced on Monday 13/1/2025 and were anticipated to be phased over 2 months have been continued from 11/8/2025 for additional engineering works to be undertaken, which are anticipated to be completed in 8 weeks. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
