A1 Trunk Road (A47 Wansford Interchange to A605 Chesterton, Cambridgeshire) - Temporary Weekend & Layby Closures and Speed Limit
What is happening?

THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (A47 WANSFORD INTERCHANGE TO A605 CHESTERTON, CAMBRIDGESHIRE)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 202_
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited(a) intends to make an Order on the A1 Trunk Road in the County of Cambridgeshire to enable the construction of a temporary lane within the central reservation to be carried out in safety.
The works would start on or after Monday 1 September 2025 and are expected to last for approximately 7 weeks.
The effect of the Order on the A1 would be –
1. To impose, for 24 hours daily, a speed restriction of 40mph on the –
• southbound carriageway from 500 metres east of the northern junction with Old North Road at Water Newton to 800 metres east of the southern junction with Old North Road, Water Newton, and
• northbound carriageway, from 1000 metres north of the A605 Chesterton entry slip road to 400 metres east of its southern junction with Old North Road, Water Newton.
2. To close, for 24 hours daily, all lay-bys adjacent to the northbound and southbound carriageways of the A1 between their junctions with the A605 Chesterton and the A47 Wansford Interchange.
3. To close for full weekends (8pm Friday - 5am Monday), starting on or after Friday 12 September, the –
• southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at the A47 Wansford Interchange to the A605 Chesterton entry slip road, and
• the A1 southbound entry slip road at the A47 Wansford Interchange.
For closures, traffic would be diverted to take the A47 eastbound at Wansford Interchange, the A1260 Nene Parkway, and the A1139 joining the A1(M) at Junction 17 to continue their journey. Access to properties would be maintained during the closures.
The temporary speed limit (which would not apply to emergency services or special forces vehicles), closures (which would not apply to emergency service or works vehicles) and diversion route would be clearly indicated by traffic signs. The Order would come into force on 25 August 2025 and may continue in force until the works detailed above have been completed, or for a maximum duration of eighteen months whichever is the earlier.
