Whitworth Street West - One Way Traffic with Contraflow Bus, Taxi and Cycle Lane

What is happening?

Notice is hereby given that Manchester City Council has made the City of Manchester (Whitworth Street West, Manchester) (One Way Traffic with Contraflow Bus, Taxi and Cycle Lane) Order 2025 under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The effect of the Order is to introduce the following provisions -

1. ONE WAY TRAFFIC (WITH CONTRAFLOW BUS LANE specified at 2. below) on: Whitworth Street West, from its junction with Deansgate / Bridgewater Viaduct to its junction with Albion Street - PERMITTED DIRECTION OF TRAVEL - in an easterly direction ie. towards Albion Street.

2. CONTRAFLOW BUS, TAXI AND CYCLE LANE - Buses, Taxis (licensed Hackey Carriages) and Cycles will be permitted to proceed in a westerly direction ie. towards Deansgate / Bridgewater Viaduct in the delineated Contraflow Lane to be located on the south side of Whitworth Street West between its junctions with Albion Street and Deansgate / Bridgewater Viaduct. 

The Order was made on 22 July 2025 and will come into effect on 11 August 2025. A copy of the Order as made and the plans may be inspected at Customer Service Centre, Ground Floor, Town Hall Extension M60 2LA (for Sat. Nav. use M2 5DB) between the hours of 9am and 4.30pm on Monday to Friday inclusive. 

Anyone wishing to question the validity of the Order or any provision contained in it on the grounds that it is not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under it has not been complied with in relation to the Order may within 6 weeks from 22 July 2025 apply to the High Court for such purpose.
