What is happening?

CITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE (AJ BELL GREAT NORTH 5k & AJ BELL JUNIOR AND MINI GREAT NORTH RUN 2025) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2025

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne intend, not less than seven days from the date of this Notice, to make an Order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, and has received consent from the Secretary of State for Transport to make such an Order.

2. The effect of the Order is to: - (a)prohibit all vehicles and pedestrians from proceeding on the lengths of highway set out in Schedule 1 to this Notice; (b) suspend the existing restrictions set out in Schedule 2 to this Notice.

3. The alternative route for vehicles and pedestrians will be via the existing road systems in the vicinity of the affected highways and will be indicated by diversion signs.

4. The Order is required to facilitate the holding of the AJ Bell Great North 5k & AJ Bell Junior and Mini Great North Run 2025 ("the Events"), to enable members of the public to watch the Events and to reduce the disruption to traffic likely to be caused by the Events. The Order is required to allow the Events to be carried out safely on or near the highway and to ensure the health and safety of the general public.

5. Exemptions in the Order permit the use of the said highways by: - (a) police, fire brigade or ambulance vehicles on emergency call (b) authorised vehicles and personnel officiating in the Event (c) at the discretion of the Event' organisers, any person watching or participating in the Event and other members of the public requiring access to the surrounding area.

6. The Order will come into operation on 5 September 2024 and will continue as follows, as and when relevant traffic signs are displayed - (a) in respect of the highways set out in (i) of Schedule 1 to this Order between the hours of 14.00 on Friday, 5 September 2025 to 20.00 on Saturday, 6th September 2025, (b) in respect of the highways set out in (ii) to (vii) of Schedule 1 to this Order between the hours of 15.00 to 21.00 on Friday, 5 September 2025 and 06.00 to 19.00 Saturday, 6 September 2025, (c) in respect of the highways set out in (viii) and (x) of Schedule 1 to this Order between the hours of 17.00 to 20.00 on Friday, 5th September 2025 and 06.00 to 19.00 Saturday, 6th September 2025, (d) in respect of the highway set out in (ix) of Schedule 1 to this Order between the hours of 17.00 to 21.00 on Friday, 5 September 2025 and from 06.00 to 19.00 on Saturday 6th September 2025, and (e) in respect of the highway set out in Schedule 2 to this Order between the hours of 14.00 Friday, 5 September 2025 to 19.00 Saturday, 6 September 2025.

SCHEDULE 1 (ROAD CLOSURES) 
(i) Quayside B1600 - between its junctions with City Road and Sandhill, 
(ii) Swing Bridge - for its entire length within Newcastle City boundary, 
(iii) Watergate - for its entire length, 
(iv) Side - between its junctions with Queen Street and Quayside, 
(v) Sandhill - between its junctions with Quayside and Close, 
(vi) Broad Chare - from its junction with Quayside northwards for 75 metres, 
(vii) Quayside Walk - between Swing Bridge and Mariners Wharf, 
(viii) Close - between its junction with Sandhill and Skinnerburn Road 
(ix) Quayside - between the west end of Marines Wharf Flats to the Ouseburn. 
(x) Horatio Street - between City Road and Quayside.

SCHEDULE 2 (RESTRICTIONS SUSPENDED) 
(i) No Right Turn from Quayside to Sandgate at the Milk Market junction, 
(ii) No Left Turn from Sandgate to Quayside at the Milk Market junction, 
(iii) No Entry Except Buses from Dean Street onto Side, 
(iv) No Entry from Side onto Queen Street, 
(v) No Motor Vehicles, except for access and permit holders from Queen Street, onto Side.
