A259 TRUNK ROAD – EAST OF RYE
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
Notice is hereby given that National Highways
Limited has made an Order on the A259 Trunk Road in the County of East Sussex, under
Sections 14(1)(a) and 14(1)(b) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed in the vicinity of the road, and because there is likelihood of danger to the public whether works are taking place or not. The effect of the Order is to impose:-
1) a 24-hour 30mph speed restriction on both carriageways of the A259 between a point approximately 35 metres east of the centreline its junction with King’s Avenue (east) (the existing 30mph to National Speed
Limit transition) and a point approximately 160 metres east of the centreline of the afore-mentioned junction;
2) a 24-hour 40mph speed restriction on both carriageways of the A259 between a point approximately 160 metres east of the centreline of its junction with King’s Avenue (east) and a point approximately 318 metres east of the centreline of Star Lane level Crossing; and
3) a 24-hour overtaking ban on the lengths of carriageway described in 1) and 2) above. These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake River Rother flood alleviation and all associated works, and because of the risk posed to the public by the nature of the road and two railway level-crossings.
The flood alleviation works are expected to continue into Autumn 2025 but the order will remain in force for a maximum of 18 months or until it is replaced by a Permanent Speed Limit Order. The work may include each-way daytime carriageway stoppages under traffic light control (08:00 – 18:00 hours maximum period).
The Order will come into force on 3rd August 2025 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months, subject to the conditions above.
The temporary speed restrictions and overtaking prohibition will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period. No diversions apply.
