ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 –
SECTION 14
THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (BROWNIESIDE BYPASS)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited has made an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the County of Northumberland, to enable resurfacing and road marking works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start at 8pm on Sunday 13 July 2025 for 2 weeks, or until completed. The effect of the order will be, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:

(i)   impose a temporary 40mph on the A1 Trunk Road from 1300 metres north of Charlton Mires to 350 metres south of Wandylaw Junction, a distance of 4200 metres;

(ii)  impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road from 650 metres north of Preston to 450 metres south of North Charlton; The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle.

It will be necessary, for 24 hours a day, to close the laybys adjacent to the A1 Trunk Road:

(i)   northbound carriageway approximately 410 metres south of the access road leading to Heckley Fence, Denwick, which will be used as an abnormal load holding area; and

(ii)  southbound carriageway approximately 150 metres south of the unnamed road leading to Corbett Cottage, which will be used as an abnormal load holding area.

It will also be necessary between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:

(i)   ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A1 at its junction with the C47 leading to North Charlton, Brownieside and the U2031 leading to Preston;

(ii)  close the gap in the central reservation approximately 2600, 3400 and 4000 metres north of Charlton Mires.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 12 July 2025 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
