What is happening?

Kent County Council, acting in exercise of its powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, makes or intends to make the following Orders.

CANTERBURY, SWALE AND THANET AREAS

 

A299 Thanet Way, Canterbury, Swale & Thanet. (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING & SUSPENSION OF ENVIRONMENTAL WEIGHT LIMIT) TEMPORARY ORDER 2025

To allow the High Speed Road Programme to be carried out, Kent County Council has made an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of A299 Thanet Way, Canterbury, Swale & Thanet, between 19:00 hours and 05:00 hours from 14th July 2025, with estimated completion by 9th October 2025, or until the works have been completed.

The proposed dates may be subject to change due to other planned works in the area, where this is necessary, updates will be sent out.

The planned dates for closures on A299 Thanet Way, extents of roads affected and alternative routes are as shown below:

Works Schedule

Phase 1 (July)

14th July 2025 - Closed between M2 Brenley Corner and A290 Clapham Hill, Whitstable - Total closure, coastbound only.

The alternative route is via A2 Boughton Bypass, Dover Road, A2050 Harbledown Bypass, Palmars Cross Hill, Rough Common Road, A290 Whitstable Road, A290 Tile Kiln Hill, A290 Blean Hill, A290 Blean Common, A290 Honey Hill, A290 Pean Hill and A290 Clapham Hill to rejoin A299.

The traffic from Whitstable Road (Graveney), Waterham Road and Highstreet Road will be diverted London-bound to Brenley Corner to join the main diversion.

15th July 2025 - Closed between A290 Clapham Hill, Whitstable and M2 Brenley Corner - Total closure, London-bound only.

The alternative route is the same as the previous night, in reverse.

The traffic from Pilgrims Lane, Dargate Road, Highstreet Road, Plumpudding Lane, Fostall and Staple Street will be diverted coastbound to A2990 Thanet Way off slip.

The 7.5T Environmental Weight Limit Order on Rough Common Road and Palmars Cross Hill will be suspended to facilitate the diversion route.

16th and 17th July 2025 - Closed between A2990 Thanet Way off slip and A299 Margate Road off slip – Total closure in both directions, this is in conjunction with Chestfield Tunnel maintenance.

The alternative route eastbound is via A299 Thanet Way off slip, A2990 Thanet Way and A299 Thanet Way on slip.

The alternative route westbound is via Margate Road off slip, A291 Canterbury Road, A2990 Thanet Way, A290 Clapham Hill and A299 Thanet Way on slip.

18th and 21st July 2025 - Closed between Herne Bay off slip and St Nicholas at Wade roundabout - Total closure, coastbound only.

The alternative route is via A291 Canterbury Road, A291 Herne Street, A291 Canterbury Road, A291 Calcott Hill, A291 Herne Bay Road, A291 Sturry Hill, A28 Island Road, A28 Staines Hill, A28 Island Road and A28 Canterbury Road to rejoin A299.

22nd and 23rd July 2025 - Closed between St Nicholas at Wade roundabout and A291 Herne Bay on slip - Total closure, London-bound only.

The alternative route is the same as the previous nights, in reverse.

24th July 2025 - Closed between St Nicholas at Wade roundabout and Monkton roundabout - Total closure, in both directions.

The alternative route is via A28 Canterbury Road, A253 Ramsgate Road, A253 Canterbury Road and vice versa.

Phase 2 (September)

15th September 2025 - Closed between M2 Brenley Corner and A290 Clapham Hill, Whitstable - Total closure, coastbound only.

The alternative route is via A2 Boughton Bypass, Dover Road, A2050 Harbledown Bypass, Palmars Cross Hill, Rough Common Road, A290 Whitstable Road, A290 Tile Kiln Hill, A290 Blean Hill, A290 Blean Common, A290 Honey Hill, A290 Pean Hill and A290 Clapham Hill to rejoin A299.
