What is happening?

THE CITY OF SUNDERLAND
(SAINT MARYS BOULEVARD, SUNDERLAND)
(20MPH SPEED LIMIT ZONE)
TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2025

Notice is hereby given by the Council of the City of Sunderland that on 2nd July 2025 it made an Order under Sections 1 and 84 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (“the Act”), and of all other enabling powers and after consultation with the Chief Officer of Police in accordance with Part III of Schedule 9 to the Act. The Order will come into operation on 14th July 2025 and will introduce a 20mph zone along the roads listed in the Schedule below. The City of Sunderland (Saint Marys Boulevard, Sunderland) (20mph Speed Limit Zone) Experimental Traffic Regulation Order 2024 is hereby revoked in its entirety. Documents giving more detailed particulars of the Order are available for inspection at the City Hall, Plater Way, Sunderland until six weeks have elapsed from the date on which the Order is made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to proceed to make the Order. An electronic copy of the documents can also be obtained by emailing:

and quoting reference: JA/82286. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Order or of any of its provisions on the grounds that it or they are not within the powers conferred by the Act or that any requirement of the Act or of any instrument made under the Act has not been complied with that person may within six weeks from the date on which the Order was made apply for the purpose to the High Court.
THE SCHEDULE 1. Cumberland Street for its entire length. 2. Garrison Field Road from a point 1.8 metres south of the extended northern building line of The Yard, to its northern extent.3. Livingstone Road for its entire length. 4. Matlock Street for its entire length. 5. Queen Street for its entire length. 6. Saint Marys Boulevard from a point 3.8 metres east of the extended western building line of Saint Marys Car Park, to a point 88.2 metres west of the extended western building line of The Yard.
