ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14
THE A1 TRUNK ROAD
(CHESWICK TO SCREMERSTON)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited has made an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the County of Northumberland, to enable carriageway resurfacing and road marking works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start at 8pm on Sunday 8 June 2025 for 1 month, or until completed.

The effect of the order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to impose a temporary 40mph, and at times 10mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road carriageway from 1000 metres south of its junction with the B6525 leading to Ancroft to 1000 metres north of its junction with Scremerston Roundabout; including Scremerston Roundabout, a distance of 4000 metres; The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle.

It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day, to close the laybys adjacent to the A1 Trunk Road:

(i)  southbound carriageway approximately 890 metres south of Scremerston Roundabout; (ii)  northbound carriageway approximately 410 metres south of the access leading to Heckley Fence, Denwick, which will be used as an abnormal load holding area; and

(iii)  southbound carriageway approximately 350 metres north of Highfields Roundabout, which will be used as an abnormal load holding area.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). Access will be maintained at all times to premises and properties which are accessible from, and only from, the A1. The Order comes into force on 7 June 2025 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.

The project manager for this scheme is Alek James.
