M27, M275 and A27, Portsmouth Area - Temporary Closures, Speed Limits & Vehicle Width Limits

What is happening?

M27 AND M275 MOTORWAYS (PORTSMOUTH)

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways intends to make an Order on the M27 and the M275 Motorways in the Unitary Authority of the City of Portsmouth, under Section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to prevent incursion into works proposed to be executed in the vicinity of the road by contractors working on behalf of said Unitary Authority.

The effect of the Order would be to authorise the overnight closure of: -

1.   the northbound carriageway of the M275 between its divergence from the link road leading to the westbound carriageway of the M27 and Marriot Crossroads (A3/A27);

2.   the southbound carriageway of the M275 between Marriot Crossroads (A3/A27) and its merge with the road leading from the eastbound carriageway of the M27;

3.   the road leading from the eastbound carriageway of the M27 to the northbound carriageway of the M275;

4.   the road leading to the westbound carriageway of the M27 from its divergence from the southbound carriageway of the M275;

5.   the road leading from the westbound carriageway of the A27 to the southbound carriageway of the M275; and

6.   the road leading to the westbound carriageway of the A27 from the northbound carriageway of the M275;

These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake carriageway repairs, resurfacing, and associated works. The works are expected to last one month starting on or after 29th May 2025. The overnight closures would be in operation between 20:00 and 05:00 (maximum periods).

The Order would come into force on 27th May 2025 and remain in force for a maximum of eighteen months, expiring on completion of the works.

Traffic affected by the closures would be diverted via other junctions of the M27 and A27 or by using the A3 and the A397. The diversion in operation would vary according to the closure in force.

The temporary closures and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.

M27 MOTORWAY, M275 MOTORWAY AND A27 TRUNK ROAD NEAR PORTSMOUTH

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways Limited has made an Order on the M27 Motorway, M275 Motorway, and A27 Trunk Road in the County of Hampshire and the Unitary Authority of the City of Portsmouth, under Section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road. The effect of the Order is:-

1)   to authorise the overnight and total weekend closure of –

a)   the westbound carriageway of the A27 and M27 between Farlington Interchange (A2030) and the slip road connecting to it from Marriot Crossroads;

b)   the eastbound carriageway of the M27 and A27 between Junction 11 (A27) and Hilsea Interchange (Portsbridge roundabout)(A3/A27);

c)   all the roads leading to and from the lengths of carriageway of the M27 and A27 described above (including the fast link at Portsbridge Roundabout);

d)   the northbound carriageway of the M275 from Junction 1 (Tipner Roundabout) to the point where it diverges into links going east and west; and

e)   the link roads connecting from the carriageway described in d) above to both carriageways of the M27;

2)   to impose a 24-hour 50mph speed restriction on -

a)   the eastbound carriageway of the M27 between a point approximately 26 metres south-east of the centreline of the A27 underbridge and approximately the centreline of the eastern underbridge at Portsbridge Roundabout (A3/A27);

b)   the westbound carriageway of the A27 and M27 between points approximately 1040 metres and 2640 metres west of the centreline of the western underbridge at Farlington Interchange ( A2030);

c)   the northbound carriageway of the M275 at Junction 12 (M27) between a point approximately 129 metres north of Gantry reference 9902B and the point at which the eastbound and westbound links diverge;

d)   the road connecting to the westbound carriageway of the M27 from the northbound carriageway of the M275 at Junction 12 (M27) between the point at which the eastbound and westbound links diverge and a point approximately 725 metres north of Gantry reference 9902B;

e)   the road connecting to the eastbound carriageway of the M27 from the northbound carriageway of the M275 at Junction 12 (M27) between the point at which the eastbound and westbound links diverge and its merge with the eastbound carriageway of the M27 ;

3)   to impose 24-hour vehicle width restrictions as follows -

a)   not exceeding 2.25 metres in lane 3 on the eastbound carriageway of the M27 and the A27 between points approximately 374 metres and 780 metres east of the centreline of the eastern M275 overbridge; and lane 2 on the road connecting to the eastbound carriageway of the M27 from the northbound carriageway of the M275 between a point approximately 410 metres north of Gantry reference 9902B and its merge with the eastbound carriageway of the M27; and

b)   not exceeding 2.5 metres in lane 2 and 2.1 metres in lane 3 on the westbound carriageway of the M27 between a point 900 metres west of the centreline of Farlington Interchange western underbridge (A2030) and a point 700 metres west of the centreline of Hilsea Interchange (Portsbridge Roundabout) western underbridge ( A3/A27/A 397). These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake bridge works including deck refurbishment and structural repairs, and all associated work.

The work will be conducted in phases, particularly in respect of the weekend closures, which will take place between 21:00 hours Fridays to 06:00 hours Mondays, and alternate between eastbound and westbound, in September through to November. The night-time closures will take place between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period). The work is expected to commence on or after Monday 12th May 2025 and last for approximately 7 months. The Order will come into force on 10th May 2025 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months, ceasing when the works are complete.

Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted by using the M275, A3, A27, A397, A2030, and Havant Road. The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force.

The temporary closures, speed restrictions, vehicle width restrictions, and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
