A1 Trunk Road, Junction 73 To Junction 80 - Temporary Prohibition of Traffic For Road Markings And Gantry Signal Replacement Works

What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14
THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (JUNCTION 73 TO JUNCTION 80)
(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the City of Newcastle, to enable road markings and gantry signal replacement works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Monday 19 May 2025 for 12 nights, or until completed.

The effect of the order will be, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:

(i) close the A1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 73 (Blaydon) to the entry slip road at Junction 80 (Seaton Burn), a distance of 10600 metres;

(ii) close the A1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 80 to the entry slip road at Junction 73, a distance of 11600 metres;

(iii) close the A1 northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at Junction 74 (Scotswood Interchange);

(iv) close the A1 northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads at Junction 80;

(v) close the A1 northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 75 (Denton Burn), Junction 76 (Westerhope), Junction 77 (Kenton Bar), Junction 78 (Fawdon) and Junction 79 (Gosforth Park);

(vi) ban cyclists on the A1 northbound and southbound carriageways as described in (i) and (ii); and (vii) close the emergency refuge area adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway approximately 530 metres south of the exit slip road at Junction 79.

Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance). The Order comes into force on 18 May 2025 and has a maximum duration of 18 months.
