The M60 Motorway - Temporary Restriction And Prohibition Of Traffic For General Maintenance Works

THE M60 MOTORWAY (JUNCTIONS 15-18 CARRIAGEWAYS, LINK & SLIP ROADS)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 09346363) intends to make an Order on the M60 Motorway, in the Borough of Bury, City of Salford and the City of Manchester, in the County of Greater Manchester, to enable the removal and installation of barriers, signage, drainage and other general maintenance works to be carried out in safety.
The Order will impose restrictions and prohibitions on the following sections of the M60 Motorway:
i. impose a 50 mph speed limit on the clockwise carriageway, from a point 145 metres east of the entry slip road at J16, to a point 100 metres east of the Sandgate Road Bridge;
ii. impose a 50 mph speed limit on the anticlockwise carriageway, from a point 165 metres east of the entry slip road at J18, to a point 65 metres east of the exit slip road at J16;
iii. ban all traffic from the clockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J15, to the first point of the entry slip road at J18;
iv. ban all traffic from the clockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J15, to the first point of the entry slip road at J17;
v. ban all traffic from the clockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J17, to the first point of the entry slip road at J18;
vi. ban all traffic from the anticlockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J18, to the first point of the entry slip road at J15;
vii. ban all traffic from the clockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J18, to the first point of the entry slip road at J17;
viii. ban all traffic from the clockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J17, to the first point of the entry slip road at J15;
ix. ban all traffic from the A580 eastbound to M60 clockwise link road for its full length;
x. ban all traffic from the M60 anticlockwise to A580 westbound link road for its full length;
xi. ban all traffic from the M60 clockwise to M61 northbound link road for its full length;
xii. ban all traffic from the M61 southbound to M60 clockwise link road for its full length;
xiii. ban all traffic from the M60 clockwise entry slip road at J16;
xiv. ban all traffic from the M60 anticlockwise exit slip road at J16:
xv. ban all traffic from the M60 clockwise exit and entry slip roads at J17;
xvi. ban all traffic from the M60 anticlockwise exit slip road at J17;
xvii. ban all traffic from the M60 anticlockwise entry slip road at J17 (this includes the designated link road from the A56 Bury New Road northbound to the M60 anticlockwise carriageway);
xviii. ban all traffic from the M60 clockwise exit and entry slip roads at J18;
xix. ban all traffic from the M60 anticlockwise exit slip road at J18;
xx. ban all traffic from the M60 anticlockwise entry slip road at J18 (this includes the designated link road from the A56 Bury New Road northbound to the M60 anticlockwise carriageway);
xxi. ban all traffic from the M60 clockwise to M66 northbound designated link road for its full length;
xxii. ban all traffic from the M66 southbound to M62 eastbound designated link road for its full length;
xxiii. ban all traffic from the M62 westbound to M66 southbound designated link road for its full length;
xxiv. ban all traffic from the M60 anticlockwise to M60 southbound designated link road for its full length;
xxv. allow the hard shoulder adjacent to the clockwise carriageway to be used as a running lane, from a point 155 metres west of the Molyneux Brow New Foot Bridge, to the Sandgate Road Bridge;
xxvi. allow the hard shoulder adjacent to the anticlockwise carriageway to be used as a running lane, from a point 90 metres west of the Sandgate Road Bridge, to a point 160 metres west of the Molyneux Brow New Foot Bridge. A 50 mph speed limit will be in force on the hard shoulders when used as running lanes, as indicated by traffic signs.
xxvii. impose a width restriction of 2.00 metres (6 feet 6 inches) in lane 4 of the clockwise carriageway, as described at xxv. above;
xxviii. impose a width restriction of 2.00 metres (6 feet 6 inches) in lane 4 of the anticlockwise carriageway, as described at xxvi. Above.
Restrictions i.-ii. and xxv.-xxviii are expected to be in place during a continuous period, subject to traffic signs, starting at 21:00 on Monday 12 May 2025 and ending at 06:00 on Sunday 31 August 2025.
Prohibitions iii.-xxiv.-x. are expected to be in place overnight between 21:00 and 06:00 (07:00 on Saturday and Sunday mornings) during a period starting on Monday 12 May 2025 and ending on Sunday 31 August 2025.
However, works may start and continue during subsequent continuous periods or between the same times on subsequent nights, until completed.
Diversion routes via alternative junctions of the M60 Motorway, A580 Trunk Road and local roads will be well signed.
The restrictions will not apply to emergency services or special-forces vehicles, and the prohibitions will not apply to emergency services or works vehicles.
The restrictions and prohibitions will only apply during such times and to such extent as shall, be indicated by traffic signs. The Order comes into force on 11 May 2025 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months. For further information, contact sam.smith@nationalhighways.co.uk
