Carlisle, Multiple Traffic Notices, Temporary Road Closures due to Carlisle Southern Link Road Works

What is happening?

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (A595 WIGTON ROAD, U1161 PETER LANE, A6 LONDON ROAD, C1037 BURTHWAITE ROAD AND C1014 NEWBIGGIN ROAD, CARLISLE) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF ALL TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to enable works in relation to the Carlisle Southern Link Road to be carried out (“the Works”), Cumberland Council intends to make an Order the effect of which is to prohibit all traffic (i.e. vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists) from proceeding along the following sections of road:

  1. A595 Wigton Road, Carlisle from its junction with the A689, Newby West Roundabout, extending in a north easterly direction for approx. 340m; and

  2. U1161 Peter Lane, Carlisle from its junction with the A689, Newby West Roundabout extending in a south easterly direction for approx. 520m.

    Alternative Routes available via: (i) the unrestricted section of Peter Lane, B5299 Dalston Road, Shaddongate, John Street, A595, Church Street and unrestricted section of Wigton Road (ii) A689, Kingmoor, Kingsway, A7 Kingston Road, Scotland Road, Hardwicke Circus, A595 Castle Way, Bridge Street, Church Street and unrestricted section of Wigton Road.

    Duration: From 22 April 2025 for approx. 8 days (Ref: TTRO/C/13133)

  3. A6 London Road, Carlisle, from its junction with the Golden Fleece Interchange (M6 Junction 42), extending in a north westerly direction for approx. 500m.

    Alternative Route: via the unrestricted section of the A6 London Road, St Nicholas Street, Blackwell Road, Durdar Road and Newbiggin Road.

    Duration: From 28 April 2025 for approx. 6 days (Ref: TTRO/C/14075)

  4. C1037 Burthwaite Road, from its junction with Newbiggin Road, extending in a southerly direction for approx. 630m.

    Alternative Route: via the unrestricted section of the C1037, C1017, C1036 and Newbiggin Road.

    Duration: From 6 May 2025 for approx. 2 months (Ref: TTRO/C/13535)

  5. C1014 Newbiggin Road, Carlisle, from its junction with Brisco Road, extending in a north easterly direction for approx. 570m.

    Alternative Route: via the unrestricted section of Newbiggin Road, Durdar Road, Blackwell Road, St Nicholas Street and A6 London Road.

    Duration: From 27 May 2025 for approx. 5 months (Ref: TTRO/C/14098)

    A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

    The Order will come into operation on 22 April 2025 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months.

    However, please note that it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required as detailed above, and only as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
