What is happening?

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2025
Sunderland City Council gives notice that it intends to make an Order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended), to facilitate the holding of relevant events, namely the Sunderland City Half Marathon, 10K and 3K Run (‘the Events’) which are to take place on Sunday 11th May 2025. The effect of the Order will be to (a) prohibit vehicles along the lengths of roads, side roads and junctions specified in Schedule 1. (b) prohibit pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders along the lengths of highway specified in Schedule 2. (c) prohibit vehicles from waiting and loading/unloading along all the lengths of roads, side roads and junctions as specified in Schedules 1 and 3. The Order shall come into force at 06:00 hours on Saturday 10th May 2025 and shall cease at 23.59 hours on Sunday 11th May 2025. However, it is estimated that the roads footpaths, cycle paths and side roads set out in Schedules 1, 2 and 3 will be closed from 06:00 on Sunday 11th May 2025 and reopened as soon as is reasonably practicable after the Event, which is anticipated to be by approximately 4.00pm, although most closures are only anticipated to be required between the hours of 8.15am and 2.30pm. The prohibition of waiting and loading and unloading will apply to all roads listed in Schedules 1 and 3 but it is estimated to only apply until the traffic cones and signs are removed or the Order expires, whichever is the earliest. During the Event, diversions for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders will be signposted via the adjacent road and highway network not required for the Event. The prohibitions shall apply at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. There will be exemptions in the Order for emergency service vehicles and personnel on duty and attending emergency calls and vehicles and personnel involved with the Event.
SCHEDULE 1 ROADS TO BE CLOSED AND PROHIBITION OF WAITING AND LOADING / UNLOADING AT ANY TIME
The following are for their full extent: Athenaeum Street, Burdon Road, Bedford Street, Bonners Field, Bridge Street, Foyle Street, Cumberland Street, Dame Dorothy Street, Fawcett Street, High Street West, Frederick Street, Harbour View, Hendon Road, Livingstone Road, John Street, Keel Square, Lambton Street, Park Road, Marine Walk, Norfolk Street, Palmer’s Hill Road, St Mary’s Boulevard, Roker Terrace, Sand Point Road, Sans Street, Toward Road, St Peter’s Way, St Thomas Street, Tatham Street, West Wear Street, Wearmouth Bridge, White House Road, West Sunniside, West Lawrence Street. The following roads are for the extent stated: Barbary Drive from Normanby Court/Craven Court to its southern extent. Borough Road from Sans Street/West Wear Street to its western extent. Lindsay Road from A1231 Salem Road to its northern extent. Ryhope Road from Queen Alexandra Road to its northern extent. Villette Road between Ryhope Road and Toward Road. As a consequence of the above roads being closed, all junctions with any of the aforementioned roads will also be closed.
SCHEDULE 2 CLOSURE OF FOOTPATHS AND CYCLE PATHS
Footpath leading from Palmers Hill Road to Palmers Hill Quay. National Cycle Network off-road cycle path, northern riverside route from Palmer’s Hill Quay, in an easterly then northerly direction. Footpaths along the west, north and east sides of North Dock. Footpaths between Normanby Court and Wheatsheaf Court. Footpath between Craven Court and Hallgarth Court. Footpath, which extends from Marine Walk into Roker Park, beneath Roker Terrace.
SCHEDULE 3 PROHIBITION OF WAITING AND LOADING / UNLOADING AT ANY TIME
Sand Point Road, full extent from 06:00 Saturday 10th May 2025.
