Washington Highway - Speed limit and Temporary Traffic Regulation
What is happening?
THE CITY OF SUNDERLAND (A182 WASHINGTON HIGHWAY) (50MPH AND 30MPH SPEED LIMIT AND CLOSURE) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2025
Sunderland City Council gives notice that it intends to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to temporarily prohibit all traffic and reduce the 70mph speed limit to 50mph and then to 30mph to divert southbound traffic onto the northbound carriageway and vice versa whilst works are being undertaken. The Order will temporarily reduce the current 70mph speed limit along the sections of road in the Schedule by suspending items (a) and (b) of Schedule 1 of the City of Sunderland (A1231 Sunderland Highway and A182 Washington Highway) (De-Restriction) Order 2009. The Order is required because works are to be undertaken on or near the road namely bridge and interchange maintenance works. The Order will come into operation on 28th April 2025. The maximum duration of the closure under this Order will be 18 months, however it is estimated that the works will only take 3 months from commencement of the works. All traffic along the roads in the Schedule (except for personnel and vehicles involved in the works) will be prohibited until the works are completed or at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. All emergency service vehicles on duty and attending an emergency call will be exempt from the speed limits imposed by this Order. All restrictions and prohibitions shall apply only at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs.
SCHEDULE (i) A182 Washington Highway from The Galleries North Interchange to Basswood Roundabout. (ii) A182 Washington Highway all associated slip roads between The Galleries North Interchange to Basswood Roundabout.
Dated 12th March 2025 Patrick Melia OBE, Chief Executive, Sunderland City Council, City Hall, Plater Way, Sunderland, SR1 3AA
