West Sussex County Council - The Local Authorities (Referendums) (Petitions and Directions)
What is happening?
West Sussex County Council
Local Government Act 2000
The Local Authorities (Referendums)
(Petitions and Directions) (England) Regulations 2011
Notice is hereby given that, as the proper officer for the purpose for West Sussex County Council, I have published the number that is equal to five percent of the number of local government electors shown in the electoral registers for the area of West Sussex for the period ending on 15 February 2026. That number is:
34,087
That number will be used for the purpose of determining the validity of any petitions presented before 1 April 2026 requesting a referendum for a change to the governance arrangements of West Sussex County Council.
However, new electoral registers are to be published on or before 15 February 2026. If five percent of the total electorate of West Sussex in the new electoral register is less than the number shown above, that lesser number will be used for any petitions received from then until 31 March 2026.
The figure published in February 2026 will be used to determine the validity of any petitions presented from 1 April 2025 to 31 March, 2027; similarly, revisions to electoral registers will be published no later than 15 February in each subsequent year, and will be used to determine the validity of petitions for each period 1 April to 31 March following publication. In each case, if the new figure of five percent is less than the previous figure, the new figure will also be used from the date of publication to 31 March in that year.
Dated this 21st day of February 2025
Tony Kershaw, Director of Law and Assurance, County Hall Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 1RQ
