What is happening?
National Highways
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 –
SECTION 14
THE A19 TRUNK ROAD
(PETERLEE TO CASTLE EDEN)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A19 Trunk Road, in County Durham, to enable lighting renewal works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 8pm on Monday 10 February 2025 for 12 months, or until completed.
The effect of the order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A19:
(i) northbound carriageway from 2270 metres south of the A181 Wellfield Overbridge to 110 metres north of the Lowhills Road Overbridge, a distance of 6050 metres;
(ii) southbound carriageway from 110 metres north of Lowhills Road Overbridge to 2270 metres south of the A181 Wellfield Overbridge, a distance of 6050 metres;
(iii) northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Wellfield Interchange; and
(iv) northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads at Peterlee Interchange;
It will be necessary to close, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, the layby adjacent to the lengths mentioned above in (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv).
Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 9 February 2025 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
The project manager for this scheme is Michael Morgan.
