A690, Carrville and Belmont - Temporary Road Closures for Carriageway Repairs

What is happening?

Order 2024

The Council on 20/12/2024 made the above Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road:

  1. A 285 metre length of the A690 westbound dual carriageway, that extends westwards from its junction with the unclassified road 27.6 High Street, which will enforce a no right turn onto it from the Park and Ride road;

  2. A 1390 metre length of the A690 eastbound carriageway that extends eastwards from the nose of the Belmont overbridge slip road, to the junction with the Meadow Road leading to Maureen Terrace and including a 460 metre length of northbound Broomside Lane / A690 Belmont overbridge eastbound on-slip, from the A690 westbound on-slip.

  3. A 100 metre length of the A690 eastbound carriageway to the junction with the Meadow Road leading to Maureen Terrace and Carrville Interchange roundabout, to enable carriageway repair works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic:

  1. From the eastern side of the closure, from the A690 south and south westerly on High Street and continuing westerly on Broomside Lane, to the A690 leading to both Durham and A1(M) to the western side of the closure;

  2. From the western side of the closure from Broomside Lane, via the westbound A690 on-slip leading to Gilesgate Roundabout and return on the A690 eastbound and south easterly on Broomside Lane and north easterly on High Street Carrville, to the A690 with access to the A1(M) or toward Sunderland.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months.

The proposed works are to commence from 8am on Monday 6/1/2025 and for the duration of the works, anticipated to be over a 6 night period, with individual closures over 4 working nights. Phase 1 from 6th and 9th January 2025, and Phases 2 and 3 from 8th and 13th January 2025.

On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
