What is happening?
M25 (Junctions 2 To 14), M20 & M26 Motorways And The A20 & A21
Trunk Roads Temporary Traffic Restrictions
Notice is hereby given that National Highways has made an Order on the M25, M20 and M26 Motorways, and the A20 and the A21 Trunk Roads, in the Counties of Surrey and Kent, under Sections 14(1)(a), 14(1)(c) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road.
The effect of the Order is to: -
1. authorise the overnight closure, in sections, of –
(a) both carriageways of the M25 between Junction 2 (A2) and Junction 14 (A3113/Heathrow Spur Road);
(b) both carriageways of the M20 between Junction 1 (A20) and Trottiscliffe Road Overbridge;
(c) both carriageways of the M26 between M25 Junction 5 (A25) and M20 Junction 3;
(d) both carriageways of the M20 between Trottiscliffe Road Overbridge and Junction 13 (A20);
(e) all the slip and link roads leading to and from the carriageways described in (a) to (d) above;
(f) the circulatory systems at M25 Junction 2 (A2), Junction 3 (M20/A20), Junction 4 (A21/A244), Junction 10 (A3), Junction 13 (A30), and Junction 14 (A3113);
(g) the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in 1. (a) to (e) above; and
(h) any emergency refuge area adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) and (d) above.
2. authorise overnight hard shoulder running adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in 1. (a) to (e) above.
3. permit HGVs in the outside lane of the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) to (d) above, during inside-lane closures.
4. authorise the overnight closure, in sections, of –
(a) both carriageways of the A21 between Chipstead Interchange (A25) and the centreline of the junction with Junction Road, Baldslow, and all slip and link roads leading to and from this length;
(b) both carriageways of the A20 between Crittalls Corner (A224) and Swanley Interchange (M20 Junction 1/M25 Junction 3);
(c) any roundabout within the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) above;
(d) any bus stop or lay-by adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) and (b) above;
(e) access to and from any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) and (b) above; and
(f) any gap between the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) and (b) above, and any dedicated lane used for the purpose of turning through them.
5. to impose, in sections as required, an overnight ban on overtaking on the A21 where it is currently permitted on the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) above.
These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and M25, M20, M26, A20 and A21 project works.
The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 2nd January 2025.
The overnight closures on the M25, M20 between Junction 1 and Trottiscliffe Road Overbridge, M26, and the A20, will be in operation between (maximum period) :
Monday – Thursdays 22:00 – 05:30
Fridays 23:00 – 06:00
Saturdays 22:00 – 06:00
Sundays 22:30 – 05:30
The overnight closures on the M20 between Trottiscliffe Road Overbridge and Junction 13 and the A21 will be in operation between 20:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).
Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures.
The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2025 and remain in force until 24th December 2025.
Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted via other junctions of the M25, M20, M26 and the A21, or by using the M3, A2, A3, A20, A22, A23, A24, A25, A26, A28, A30, A31, A217, A223, A224, A225, A227, A228, A229, A240, A245, A249, A262, A264, A282, A308, A317, A320, A331, A2014, A2018, A2025, A2100, A3044, A3113, B245, B2087, B2162, B2173, and local roads as necessary.
The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force, and the diversion roads listed are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions.
The temporary closures, hard shoulder and HGV outside lane running, overtaking bans and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
Access to and from premises accessible from, and only from, the lengths of carriageway in article 4. above to be closed will be permitted under works control.
