M25 And M3, Motorways & A3 Trunk Road - Temporary Traffic Restrictions For Works

What is happening?

M25 (Junctions 2 To 14) And M3 (Junctions 1 To 14)

Motorways & A3 Trunk Road Temporary Traffic Restrictions

Notice is hereby given that National Highways has made an Order on the M25 and M3 Motorways and the A3 Trunk Road in the Counties of Kent, Surrey and Hampshire, and the Unitary Authority of Windsor and Maidenhead, under Sections 14(1)(a), 14(1)(c) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road.

The effect of the Order is, in phases, to : - 

1. authorise the overnight closure of –
(a) sections of both carriageways of the M25 between Junction 2 (A2) and Junction 14 (A3113/Heathrow Spur Road);

(b) sections of both carriageways of the M3 between Junction 1 (A316) and the centreline of Kitsmead Lane overbridge;

(c) sections of both carriageways of the M3 between the centreline of Kitsmead Lane overbridge and Junction 14 (M27 Junction 4);

(d) all slip and link roads leading to and from the carriageways described in 1. (a) to (c) above; 

(e) the circulatory systems at M25 Junction 2 (A2), M25 Junction 3 (M20/A20), M25 Junction 4 (A21/A244), M25 Junction 10 (A3), M25 Junction 13 (A30, M25 Junction 14 (A3113), M3 Junction 6 (Spur Road), M3 Junction 9 (A34), and M3 Junction 12 (A335);

(f) the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in 1. (a) to (d) above; and

(g) any emergency refuge area adjacent to the lengths of carriageway in 1. (a) to (c) above.

2. authorise the overnight use of the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in 1. (a) to (d) above.

3. permit HGVs in the outside lane of the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) to (c) above, during inside-lane closures.

4. authorise the overnight closure of - 
(a) sections of both carriageways of the A3 between Hook Underpass (A309) and Ockham Interchange (B2039/B2215);

(b) sections of both carriageways of the A3 between Ockham Interchange (B2039/B2215) and a point 500 metres north-west of the northern entry/exit of Hindhead Tunnel;

(c) both carriageways of the A3 between the centreline of Hazel Grove Interchange (A333) and Horndean Interchange (A3(M) Junction 1); 

(d) all slip and link roads leading to and from the carriageways described in 4. (a) to (c) above;

(e) Ham Barn roundabout (B3006);

(f) any lay-by, bus stop, right-hand turn lane or gap in the central reservation adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) to (c) above;

(g) any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) to (c) above; and

(h) both carriageways of the A3 between Hazel Grove Interchange (A333) and a point 500 metres north-west of the northern entry/exit of Hindhead Tunnel. A contra-flow system will be in operation on the carriageway that remains open. The slip road leading to the northbound carriageway of the A3 at Hazel Grove Interchange (A333) will be closed during northbound carriageway closures.

These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and M25, M3 and A3 project works.

The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 2nd January 2025.

Overnight closures taking place on the M3 between Kitsmead Lane and Junction 14, and the A3 between Ockham and A3(M) Junction 1 will be in operation between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).

The overnight closures on the M25, M3 between Junction 1 and Kitsmead Lane and the A3 between Hook Interchange and Ockham Interchange will be in operation between (maximum period) : 

Monday – Thursdays             22:00 – 05:30
Fridays                                  23:00 – 06:00
Saturdays                             22:00 – 06:00
Sundays                               22:30 – 05:30

Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures.

The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2025 and remain in force until 24th December 2025.

Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted via other junctions of the M25, M3 and A3, or by using the M20, M26, M27, A2, A20, A22, A23, A24, A25, A27, A30, A31, A32, A34, A217, A223, A224, A230, A240, A243, A244, A245, A246, A247, A287, A303, A308, A311, A312, A317, A320, A331, A322, A325, A327, A2025, A3008, A3044, A3090, A3100, A3113, B382, B2039, B2070, B2171, B2215, B3000, B3002, B3004, B3006, B3040, B3041, B3049, B3335, B3349, B3420, Bridge Road, Chillbrook Road, Downside Bridge Road, Downside Road, Forest Road, Horsley Road and Old Lane. 

The environmental weight limit on the A3008 (Hampton High Street) will be suspended to allow its use as a diversion. The diversion routes listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions.

The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force. 

The temporary closures, hard shoulder and HGV outside lane running and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
