A303 Trunk Road (Stonehenge Winter Solstice, Wiltshire)

(Temporary Restriction And Prohibition Of Traffic) Order 2024 

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) has made an Order on the A303 trunk road, near Amesbury in Wiltshire, because of the likelihood of danger to the public.

The restrictions are expected to be in place between 00.01 hours on Sunday 15 December 2024 and ending at 21.00 hours on Monday 23 December 2024. The effect of the Order is :

(a) to impose a 40 miles per hour temporary mandatory speed limit on the A303 trunk road near Amesbury from its junction with the A360 at Longbarrow roundabout to its junction with A345 at Countess roundabout;

(b) to authorise the closure of the laybys:

(i) adjacent to the northern side of the A303 situated 240 metres east of the eastern edge of the A360 Longbarrow roundabout;

(ii) adjacent to the southern side of the A303 situated 660 metres east of the eastern edge of the A360 Longbarrow roundabout;

(iii) adjacent to the eastbound carriageway of the A303 situated 1160 metres east of its junction with the A344; 

(iv) adjacent to the westbound carriageway of the A303 situated 1160 metres east of its junction with the A344.

(c) to prohibit vehicles stopping on the verge adjacent to the A303 over the same length as described at (a) above.

These measures will be in the interests of road safety to ensure the safe, free flow of traffic during the Stonehenge Winter Solstice event.

The restrictions will not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles.

The temporary mandatory speed restriction, layby closures and stopping prohibition will be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the period of danger.

The Order will come into force on 13 December 2024 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months.
