What is happening?
M4 MOTORWAY (JUNCTIONS 5 TO 15) AND A34 TRUNK ROAD
(M3 JUNCTION 9 TO M40 JUNCTION 9) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
Notice is hereby given that National Highways has made an Order on the M4
Motorway in the Unitary Authorities of Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead, Reading, Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire, Swindon and Wiltshire, and the A34 Trunk Road in the Counties of Hampshire and Oxfordshire and the Unitary Authority of West Berkshire, under Sections 14(1)(a), 14(1)(c) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road. The effect of the Order is to: -
1. authorise the overnight closure of-
(a) both carriageways (in sections as required) of the M4 between Junction 5
(A4) and Junction 15 (A419/A346), and all slip roads leading to and from those carriageways;
(b) the circulatory systems at M4 Junction 8/9 (A308(M)/A404(M)), Junction 13
(A34) and Junction 15 (A346/A419);
(c) the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip roads
described in 1. (a) above; and
(d) any emergency refuge area adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described
in 1. (a) above.
2. authorise the overnight suspension of the Motorway Regulations prohibiting use of the outside lane by HGVs on the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above, during inside lane closure.
3. authorise overnight hard shoulder running on the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above.
4. authorise the overnight closure of: -
(a) both carriageways of the A34 (in sections as required) between the roundabout at M3 Junction 9 and the roundabout at M40 Junction 9, and all
slip roads leading to and from this length; (b) any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) above; (c) any lay-by or bus stop adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) above; and (d) any gap in the central reservation, and their dedicated right-hand turn lanes, adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) above.
These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake
maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and M4 and A34 project works. The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 2nd January 2025.
Overnight closures taking place on the M4 and connecting roads between Junctions 5 and 15 and the A34 will be in operation between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period). (The M4 Order extends into London not covered by this newspaper). Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures.
The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2025 and remain in force until
24th December 2025.
During closures above, traffic affected will be diverted via other junctions of the M4 and the A34, or by using the M3, M4, M25, M40, A4, A30, A33, A34, A40, A44, A303, A308, A308(M), A312, A322, A329(M), A338, A339, A343, A355, A404(M), A415, A417, A418, A419, A420, A423, A3044, A3093, A3113, A3290, A4074, A4130, A4142, A4155, A4183, A4185, B3270, B4017, B4192 and the B4640. The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force, and the roads listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions. The temporary closures, hard shoulder and HGV outside lane running and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
