Notice is hereby given that National Highways has made an Order on the M4 Motorway in the Unitary Authorities of Buckinghamshire County, Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead, Reading, Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire, Swindon, and Wiltshire and the London Boroughs of Hounslow and Hillingdon, the
A404(M) and A308(M) Motorways in the Unitary Authority of Windsor & Maidenhead, and the A404 Trunk Road in the Unitary Authorities of Buckinghamshire County and Windsor & Maidenhead, under Sections 14(1)(a), 14(1)(c) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road.
The effect of the Order is to: -

  1. authorise the overnight closure of –

(a) both carriageways of the M4 between Junction 5 (A4) and Junction 15 (A419/A346), in sections;

(b) both carriageways of the A404(M), between M4 Junction 8/9 roundabout
and Junction 9B (A4);

(c) both carriageways of the A308(M);

(d) all slip and link roads leading to and from the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) and (b) above;

(e) the entire circulatory systems at M4 Junction 8/9 (A308(M)/A404(M)), Junction 13 (A34) and Junction 15 (A346/A419);

(f) the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in 1. (a) to (c) above; and

(g) any emergency refuge area adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above.

2. authorise overnight hard shoulder running on the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) to (c) above.

3. permit HGVs in the outside lane of the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above, during inside-lane closures.

4. authorise the overnight closure of –
(a) both carriageways of the A404 between Maidenhead Thicket Interchange
(A404(M)) and M40 Junction 4, and all slip and link roads leading to and from them;

(b) the entire circulatory systems at Bisham Roundabout (A308) and Handy Cross Roundabout (M40 Junction 4/A4010);

(c) any lay-by and bus stop adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) above; and

(d) any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) above.

These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and M4, A404(M), A308(M) and A404 project works.

The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme
of works will start on or after 2nd January 2025.

Overnight closures taking place on the M4 and connecting roads between Junctions 5 and 15, A404(M), A308(M) and the A404 will be in operation between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period). (The M4 Order extends into London not covered by this newspaper).

Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see
National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures.
The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2025 and remain in force until 24th December 2025.

During closures above, traffic affected will be diverted via other junctions of the M4, A404(M), A308(M) and the A404 or by using the A4, A308,
A329(M), A338, A339, A419, A3290, A4094, A4130, A4155, B3270 and the B4192.

The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force, and the roads listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions.

The temporary closures, hard shoulder and HGV outside lane running and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
