M4 MOTORWAY – JUNCTIONS 15-14 TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the M4 Motorway in the Unitary Authorities of Wiltshire and West Berkshire, under Section 14(1)(a) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road. The effect of the Order would be:-

1) to authorise the overnight closure of the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between Junction 15 (A346/A417) and Junction 14 (A338), and all the slip roads leading to and from this length of carriageway;

2) to allow 24-hour hard shoulder running on the east-bound carriageway of the M4 between a point approximately 1150 metres west of Baydon Road overbridge and a point approximately 900 metres east of Chalkpit Cottages overbridge; and 3) to impose a 24-hour 50 mph speed restriction on: a) the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between a point approximately 1970 metres west of Baydon Road overbridge and a point approximately 1130 metres east of Chalkpit Cottages overbridge; b) the slips leading to and from that length of carriageway at Membury Services; and c) the hard shoulder described in 2) above.

These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake carriageway works including line-painting and re-studding, and other associated works. It is expected that the work would last for approximately 2 months starting on or after Monday 13th January 2025. Overnight closures would take place between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period). Please consult the National Highways website for details. The Order would come into force on 11th January 2025 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months, ceasing when the works are complete. Traffic affected by the closures would be diverted southbound on the the A346, eastbound on the A4 and northbound on the A338 (HGVs), light traffic would be diverted northbound on the A419, eastbound on the B4192, and northbound on the A338. The temporary closures, speed restriction, hard shoulder running, and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
