THE A43 TRUNK ROAD (EVENLEY TO TOWCESTER, WEST

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND

PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) (No.2) ORDER 2024

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No.

9346363) intends to revoke an existing Order and make a new Order on the A43 Trunk Road, in the County of West Northamptonshire, to enable a new roundabout to be constructed and maintenance works to be carried out. The effect of the Order, will be to, at different times, –

(1)  impose a 50 miles per hour speed limit on the northbound carriageway of the A43 between points 1150 metres southwest and 400 metres northeastof the centreline of the A413 overbridge, near Silverstone;

(2)  impose a 40 miles per hour speed limit on –

(a)  the northbound carriageway of the A43 from a point 400 metres northeast of the centreline of the A413 overbridge, near Silverstone, to a point 319 metres southwest of its roundabout junction with Brackley Road (Abthorpe Roundabout), near Towcester; and

(b)  the southbound carriageway of the A43 from a point 70 metres southwest of its junction with Abthorpe Roundabout, to a point 850 metres northeast of the centreline of the A413 overbridge, near Silverstone; (3) close –

(a)  the northbound and southbound carriageways of the A43 between the roundabout junction with the A421 and the B4031 (Barley Mow Roundabout), near Evenley, and its roundabout junction with the A5

(Towcester Roundabout), at Towcester;

(b)  any slip road or link road leading to or from the length of the A43 described in (3)(a) above; (c) the layby adjacent to –

(i)   the northbound carriageway of the A43 approximately 700 metres southwest of the centrepoint of Abthorpe Roundabout; and

(ii)  the southbound carriageway of the A43 approximately 800 metres southwest of the centrepoint of Abthorpe Roundabout;

(4)  close the northbound carriageway of the A43 from a point 1100 metres south of the centrepoint of Abthorpe Roundabout to a point 250 metres south of the centrepoint of Abthorpe Roundabout and allow traffic to use lane 2 of the southbound carriageway in a contraflow manner;

(5)  close the southbound carriageway of the A43 from a point 250 metres south of the centrepoint of Abthorpe Roundabout to a point 1150 metres south of the centrepoint of Abthorpe Roundabout and allow traffic to use lane 2 of the southbound carriageway in a contraflow manner;

(6)  prohibit any vehicle from overtaking a moving vehicle on the lengths of the A43 described in (4) and (5) above;

(7)  prohibit any vehicle with an overall width exceeding 3.3 metres from entering or proceeding on the lengths of the A43 described in (4) and (5) above; and

(8)  prohibit any vehicle from entering or leaving the length of the A43 described in (3)(a) above at the junction with any side road or access road. The work started on Saturday 23 November 2024 and is expected to continue for a further nineteen months. The closures and prohibition described in paragraphs (3)(a), (3)(b) and (8) above will be in operation overnight between 20:00 and 06:00 hours. The speed restrictions and layby closures will be in operation 24 hours per day for the duration of the works. The contraflow, overtaking ban and width restriction will be carried out in two phases starting in January 2025 and continuing for approximately 11 months.

This Order will come into force on Monday 6 January 2025 and will remain in force until completion of the work.

Any vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restrictions, closures and prohibition. Special forces vehicles will be exempt from the speed restrictions and vehicles being used in connection with the works or for winter maintenance purposes will be exempt from the closures and prohibition. No vehicles will be exempt from the contraflow. Access to properties will be maintained at all times.
