What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (A690 Leazes Road, Durham City) (Temporary Road, Footpaths Closure and Prohibition of Left Turn) Order 2024

The Council on 4/10/2024 made the above Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit and restrict all vehicular and pedestrian traffic from proceeding on the following lengths or road and footpaths in the manner described below:- Road Closure (closed to vehicular traffic) a 240 metre length of A690 Leazes Road between its junctions with Ravensworth Terrace and A690/A181 Gilesgate Roundabout. Prohibition of left Turn (vehicular traffic) from Ravensworth Terrace turning left onto the A690 Leazes Road. Footpath Closure (closed to pedestrian traffic) a 225 metre length of northern associated footway of A690 from the eastern side of the road junction leading to Ravensworth Terrace and extending eastward to the pedestrian crossing point at Gilesgate Roundabout; an 107 metre length of segregated footpath running parallel to A690 Leazes Road to the rear of Southland to 193 Gilesgate; a 20 metre length of footpath to the side of number 193 Gileagate; a 58 metre length of southern associated footway of A690 extending eastward from 18 metres west of the footbridge; the footbridge crossing A690 between Gilesgate and Leazes Road to enable footbridge demolition works to be completed. An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic under 7.5T from the eastern side of the closure from Gilesgate Roundabout easterly via A181, continuing south easterly through Sherburn House, westerly on B1198, north westerly on A177, north on Church Street and New Elvet to the western side of the closure, and vice versa. An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic over 7.5T from the eastern side of the closure from Gilesgate Rounbdabout east on A690 to A1(M) Junction 62 then northwards via the A1(M) to Junction 63 Chester-le-Street then generally southwards on A167 and A690 to the western side of the closure and vice versa. An alternative route will be available to pedestrian traffic from the eastern side of the footway/footpath closure via the pedestrian crossing on the western side of A690 Gilesgate Roundabout onto Gilesgate leading west toward Claypath then south on Ravensworth Terrace to A690 Leazes Road; then west to the subway leading to the southern footway of A690 Leazes Road to the western side of the closures, and vice versa. The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are to commence from Friday 4/10/2024 with works anticipated for one additional night between 7pm-5am, anticipated to be from Sunday 6/10/2024. On occasions, alternative dates for closure may be necessary and these will be signed accordingly.
