The A1(M) Motorway & A1 Trunk Road (Barnsdale Bar) - Temporary Restrictions for Maintenance Works

What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14

THE A1(M) MOTORWAY AND THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (BARNSDALE BAR)

(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1(M) Motorway and the A1 Trunk Road, in the counties of West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, to enable barrier, signing, lighting, drainage and routine maintenance works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start at 8pm on Monday 28 October 2024 for 2 months,  or until completed.

The effect of the Order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to:

(i)     impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A1(M)/A1 northbound and southbound carriageways from the overbridge at Barnsdale Bar to the entry slip road at Junction 37(Marr), a distance of 9000 metres;

(ii)    close the layby adjacent to the A1 northbound and southbound carriageway approximately 1040 metres north of Junction 38 (redhouse).

It will be necessary to, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:

(i)     close the A1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 38 to the entry slip road at Barnsdale Bar, a distance of 5000 metres;

(ii)    close the A1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Barnsdale Bar to the entry slip road at Junction 38, a distance of 4700 metres;

(iii)   close the A1(M) northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 37 to the entry slip road at Junction 38, a distance of 5080 metres;

(iv)   close the A1(M) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 38 to the entry slip road at Junction 37, a distance of 4910 metres;

(v)    close the A1 northbound and southbound exit slip roads at Barnsdale Bar;

(vi)   close the A1(M) northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at Junction 37;

(vii)  close the A1(M) northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads at Junction 38;

(viii) close the A1 southbound exit slip road at Junction 38 ;

(ix)   close the A638 eastbound link road with the A1 northbound link road;

(x)    ban vehicles from entering or leaving Leys Lane, Esso Fuel Station and Bannister Lane adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway;

(xi)   ban vehicles from entering or leaving New Close Lane, Scorcher Hills Lane, Great North Road, Green Lane and Hampole Balk Lane adjacent to the A1 southbound carriageway; and

(xii)  close the footways adjacent to the A1 northbound and southbound carriageways between Skellow Footbridge and Leys Land and the Esso Fuel station.

During the closures, suitably signed alternative routes will be available.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works, to anyone engaged in the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). Access will be maintained at all times to premises and properties which are accessible from, and only from, the A1. The Order comes into force on  27 October 2024 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months apart from the footpath closure, which has a maximum duration of 6 months.
