Riding of the Marches Event, Edinburgh - Traffic Orders on Various Roads
What is happening?
THE CITY OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL
(RIDING OF THE MARCHES) (TEMPORARY ROAD RESTRICTION AND TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2024 – TEMP/24/181
The Council, with the consent of Scottish Ministers, has made an order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, the effect of which will be that for a temporary period, to facilitate public safety during the Riding of the Marches event, no person shall:
(a) cause or permit any motor vehicle to enter, proceed or wait in or on any part of the lengths of roads specified in Sch 1, where prohibitions apply to roads in their entirety unless otherwise stated; (b) drive or cause or permit to be driven any motor vehicle on the sections of roads specified in column 1 of Sch 2, otherwise than in the direction specified in column 2 of Sch 2; & (c) except with the permission of a Parking Attendant, cause or permit any vehicle to wait or load onto or unload from any vehicle on the sections of roads described in Sch 3, where prohibitions apply to both sides of the roads in their entirety unless otherwise stated.
The following restrictions shall be suspended between 10:30hrs & 18:00hrs on 15/9/24: prohibition of waiting, loading & unloading, prohibition of motor vehicles & oneway on High St, to facilitate the holding of the Riding of the Marches event. Existing restrictions may be suspended on the affected sections of roads described in Sch 3. The alternative route for vehicular traffic is via Calton Rd, Leith St, Princes St, Nth Bridge, Sth Bridge, Blair St, Cowgate, Saint Mary’s St & Jeffrey St. The order will have effect on 15/9/24, during the hours specified in the Schedules.
SCHEDULE 1 PROHIBITION OF MOTOR VEHICLES (except event vehicles):
(A) from 09:00hrs to 12:15hrs on: (i) Gilmerton Rd, from its jnct with the roundabout at the City Bypass to Gilmerton Station Rd; (ii) Gilmerton Station Rd; (iii) Lasswade Rd, from Gilmerton Station Rd to Captain’s Rd; (iv) Captain’s Rd; (v) Alnwickhill Rd, from Howden Hall Rd to Stanedykehead; (vi) Stanedykehead; (vii) Mounthooly Loan, from Frogston Rd West to Galachlawside; (viii) Frogston Rd West, from Winton Drv to Frogston Brae; (ix) Frogston Brae; (x) Frogston Rd East; & (xi) Lang Loan;
(B) from 10:30hrs to 18:00hrs on: (i) High St, from Nth Bridge to Lawnmarket; (ii) Lawnmarket, from High St to George IV Bridge; (iii) West Parliament Sq; (iv) Parliament Sq; & (v) Saint Giles’ St;
(C) from 14:00hrs to 16:00hrs on: (i) Ferniehill Rd, from Old Dalkeith Rd to Moredun Park Rd; (ii) Moredun Park Rd, from Ferniehill Rd to Craigour Ave; (iii) Craigour Ave; (iv) Craigour Drv, from Craigour Ave to Moredunvale Rd; (v) Moredunvale Rd, from Craigour Drv to Old Dalkeith Rd; (vi) Old Dalkeith Rd, from Moredunvale Rd to Craigmillar Castle Rd; (vii) Craigmillar Castle Rd; (viii) Castlebrae Ave, from Castlebrae Wynd to Craigmillar Castle Rd; (ix) Duddingston Rd West, from Niddrie Mains Rd to Old Church La; (x) Old Church La; & (xi) Holyrood Park Rd, from Queen’s Drv to East Parkside;
(D) from 14:30hrs to 18:00hrs on: (i) Queen’s Drv; (ii) Horse Wynd; (iii) Canongate; (iv) Cranston St; (v) New St, from East Market St to Canongate; (vi) Lawnmarket, from George IV Bridge to Johnston Ter; (vii) Castle Ter, from Johnston Ter to Lady Lawson St; (viii) Lady Lawson St, from Castle Ter to West Port; & (ix) West Port, from Lady Lawson St to King’s Stables Rd; &
(E) from 12:30hrs to 18:00hrs on: (i) King’s Stables Rd; & (ii) Grassmarket, from King’s Stables Rd to West Port; & (F) from 16:00hrs to 18:30hrs on: Johnston Ter.

(A) from 06:00hrs to 18:00hrs on: (i) King’s Stables Rd: (1) nth/nth-east side: (a) from its jnct with Lothian Rd, generally south-eastwards for 580m; & (b) from the northern kerbline of Grassmarket (west-east section), northwards for 7.5m; & (2) sth/sth-west side, in its entirety; (ii) Johnston Ter, nth side, from the westernmost extent of Castle Wynd North steps, eastwards for 62m; (iii) West Port (except recessed bays); (iv) East Fountainbridge (except recessed bays); & (v) Grassmarket, from King’s Stables Rd to West Port;
(B) from 10:30hrs to 18:00hrs on: (i) Lawnmarket, both sides, from George IV Bridge to High St; (ii) High St, both sides, from Lawnmarket to Sth Bridge; & (iii) Saint Giles’ St: (1) nth side, from 30m east of its jnct with Nth Bank St, eastwards for 17m; (2) sth side, from its jnct with Nth Bank St, eastwards for 30m; & (3) east side, in its entirety;
(C) from 11:30hrs to 18:00hrs on: (i) Lawnmarket, both sides, from Johnston Ter to George IV Bridge; (ii) High St, both sides, from Sth Bridge to Canongate; (iii) Abbey Strand; (iv) Calton Rd, both sides, from its jnct with Abbeyhill, westwards for 50m; (v) Horse Wynd; (vi) Queen’s Drv, both sides, from Holyrood Gait to Horse Wynd; & (vii) Lady Lawson St, nth-east side, from Spittal St to West Port;
(D) from 12:00hrs to 18:00hrs on Canongate; &
(E) from 13:00hrs to 16:00hrs on Old Church La.
