What is happening?

M40 MOTORWAY AND A404 TRUNK ROAD 
(HANDY CROSS)
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
Notice is hereby given that National Highways 
has made an Order on the M40 Motorway and 
the A404 Trunk Road in the Unitary Authority 
of Buckinghamshire Council, under Section 
14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 
because works are proposed to be executed 
on the road.
The effect of the Order is to authorise the 
overnight and full weekend closure of –
1. M40 Junction 4 (Handy Cross) roundabout, 
including the including the separate 
section of carriageway which bypasses the 
northern part of the roundabout and all slip 
roads leading to and from it;
2. both carriageways the A404 between 
Handy Cross roundabout and Westhorpe 
Interchange (A4155), and all slip roads 
leading to and from this length of 
carriageway;
3. the shared use cycle track and footway 
between Wycombe Road and the A4010 
through Handy Cross Roundabout; and
4. any lay-by adjacent to the length of 
carriageway in 2. above.

These measures are in the interests of road 
safety while contractors undertake resurfacing 
and all associated works.

It is expected that the work will take place over 
two phases of works. The first phase of works 
will consist of overnight closures and will last 
for approximately one week, starting on or 
after Monday 12th August 2024. The second 
phase of works will last for approximately 
3 weeks with 1 weekend closure starting on or 
after Friday 13th September 2024.

The weekend closure will take place between 
21:00 on Friday and 06:00 on Monday. The 
overnight closures will take place between 
21:00 and 06:00, except the lay-bys which 
can be shut from 18:00 to 06:00 (maximum 
periods). Please check the National Highways 
website for full details.

The Order will come into force on 10th August 2024 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months, ceasing when the works are complete.

Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted 
via other junctions of the M40 and the A404, or 
by using the A40, A355, A4010, A4094, A4155, 
Ibstone Road, Marlow Road, Wycombe Road 
and Wiltshire Road. The diversion route will 
vary depending on the closure in force and the intended destination.

The temporary closures and diversion routes 
will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when 
they are in operation during the works period.
