Abbey Road, Temporary Prohibition of Vehicular Traffic

What is happening?

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT ORDER THE LONDON BOROUGH OF BARKING AND DAGENHAM (ABBEY ROAD, TOWN QUAY AND HIGHBRIDGE ROAD, BARKING) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF VEHICULAR TRAFFIC) ORDER 2024 NOTICE OF MAKING

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that in order to facilitate highway improvement works to complete the diversion of Town Quay road to facilitate the construction of a new public riverside walk, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has made a Temporary Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The order is expected to come in to effect on Monday 12 August 2024. The works expected for:

* Highway improvement works to complete the diversion of Town Quay road to facilitate the construction of a new public riverside walk take 122 days to complete. Completion date estimated as Monday 2 December 2024. The works leading to the closures is expected to be undertaken at all times.

However, the Order will remain in force for 18 months to be re-introduced should further works be required.

3. When the works are taking place and the appropriate traffic signs are being displayed the Order will temporarily: -

* Prohibit all vehicular traffic on Town Quay, both sides, from its junction with Abbey Road to its junction with Highbridge Road

* Prohibit all vehicular traffic (Except for Access) on Highbridge Road, both sides, from its junction with Town Quay to its junction with West Bank

* Suspend the one-way on Highbridge Road, from its junction with West Bank to its junction with Town Quay, to allow for two-way traffic

* Prohibit all vehicles from turning right from Abbey Road, southbound carriageway, into Town Quay

* Prohibit all vehicles from turning left from Abbey Road, northbound carriageway, into Town Quay

* Prohibit all pedestrians on Town Quay footpath, both sides, from its junction with Abbey Road to its junction with Highbridge Road

* Suspend the pedestrian crossing on Abbey Road, both sides, from

a point 56 metres north of its junction with Town Quay for a distance of 6.5 metres in a northerly direction.

4. When this closure is in place the following location will temporarily be controlled by:

* 2-way signalled controlled pedestrian crossing on Abbey Road, from a point 9 metres north of the southern flank wall of No's 7-24 Abbey Road for 9 metres in a northerly direction.

5. Alternative routes for Vehicular traffic will be maintained and signed:

* Via Abbey Road, London Road (A124), Highbridge Road and vice versa.

6. Alternative route for pedestrians will be maintained and signed:

* Via Highbridge Road, the east side footpath along the River Roding (fronting No's 1-52 Benedicts Wharf), Barking Wharf Square, Abbey Road west side footpath and vice versa.
