A696 Trunk Road - Temporary Restriction And Prohibition Of Traffic For Resurfacing Works

THE A696 TRUNK ROAD (PRESTWICK ROAD END TO KENTON BAR)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A696 Trunk Road, in the County of Northumberland, to enable resurfacing, replacement road markings, road studs, sign replacement, loop installation and verge clearance works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Wednesday 22 July for 2 months, or until completed.

The effect of the Order will be, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:

(i) close the A696 northbound and southbound carriageways from its junction with the A167 to its Junction with Prestwick Road End, a distance of 5100 metres;

(ii) close the A696 northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Callerton Lane;

(iii) close the A696 southbound exit and entry slip roads at Station Road;

(iv) close the A696 northbound exit and entry slip roads at Newbiggin Lane;

(v) close the A696 northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Kenton Bar;

(vi) close the un-segregated footway/cycle track adjacent to the A696 northbound and southbound carriageway from its junction with A167 to its junction with Prestwick Road, a distance of 5100 metres;

(vii) to impose a contraflow system on the A696 southbound and northbound carriageways from Prestwick Road End Roundabout to Newcastle Airport Roundabout, a distance of 320 metres;

(viii) ban vehicles from entering or leaving its junction with the A696 at B6918, Prestwick Road and the A167.

It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day, to:

(i) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A696 northbound and southbound carriageways from 60 metres south of Prestwick Road End Roundabout to 100 metres south of Kenton Bar Roundabout, a distance of 5240 metres.

(ii) close the layby adjacent to A696 northbound carriageway 840 metres north of Kenton Bankfoot Interchange; and

(iii) close the layby adjacent to the A696 southbound carriageway 610 metres south of Black Callerton Lane Interchange.

Traffic management will be in force and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes).

Access will be maintained at all times to premises and property which are accessible from, and only from, the A696.

The Order comes into force on 21 July 2024 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
