Severn Road, Temporary Prohibitions & Restrictions Due To Maintenance Works

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 -SECTIONS 14(1)(a) AND 14(7) THE M4 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 21 TO 22) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2024

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the M4 Motorway in South Gloucestershire to enable renewal works and associated maintenance to be carried out in safety. The works are expected to take place on or after 1 July 2024 and be completed by 29 November 2024.

The effect of the Order will be to:

(a) impose a temporary mandatory 50 mph speed limit on the M4 westbound from Severn Road Overbridge to 1000m west of Severn Road Overbridge;

(b) impose a temporary mandatory 40 mph speed limit on the M4 westbound from 1000m west of Severn Road overbridge to 192 metres west of the centre of M4 Junction 22;

(c) prohibit vehicles over with an overall width of over 2.75 metres from the outside lane of the length of the M4 given at (b) above;

(d) prohibit vehicles over with an overall width of over 3.25 metres from the length of the M4 given at (b) above;

(e) authorise the operation of a contraflow on the length of the M4 given at (b) above;

(f) authorise the overnight (21.00 to 06.00) closure of the M4 eastbound from Junction 22 to Junction 21;

(g) authorise the overnight (20.00 to 06.00) closure of the M4 westbound from Junction 21 to Junction 22.

There would also be hard shoulder running through the works.

The restrictions would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles.

During the closures traffic will be diverted via Junctions of the M48 Severn Bridge.

The temporary mandatory speed limits (which would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles) closures, contraflow, width restrictions, hard shoulder running, and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works period and would only apply when traffic management measures are in place.

The Order would come into force on 29 June 2024 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months.
