What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1)(B)
A303 TRUNK ROAD (STONEHENGE SUMMER SOLSTICE, WILTSHIRE)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2024
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the A303 trunk road, near Amesbury in Wiltshire, because of the likelihood of danger to the public.
The restrictions are expected to be in place between 09.00 hours on Wednesday 19 June 2024 and ending at 04.00 hours on Sunday 22 June 2024.
The effect of the Order is:
(a) to impose a 40 miles per hour temporary mandatory speed limit on the A303 trunk road near Amesbury from its junction with the A360 at Longbarrow Roundabout to its junction with the A345 at Countess Roundabout.
(b) to authorise the closure of the laybys:
(i) adjacent to the northern side of the A303 situated 240 metres east of the eastern edge of the A360 Longbarrow Roundabout;
(ii) adjacent to the southern side of the A303 situated 660 metres east of the eastern edge of the A360 Longbarrow Roundabout;
(iii) adjacent to the eastbound carriageway of the A303 situated 1450 metres west of the eastern edge of the A345 Countess Roundabout;
(iv) adjacent to the westbound carriageway of the A303 situated 1450 metres west of the eastern edge of the A345 Countess Roundabout.
(c) to prohibit vehicles stopping on the verge adjacent to the A303 over the same length as described at (a) above.
These measures would be in the interests of road safety to ensure the safe, free flow of traffic during the Stonehenge Summer Solstice event.
The restrictions would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles.
The temporary mandatory speed restriction, layby closures and stopping prohibition would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the period of danger.
The Order would come into force on 17 June 2024 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months.
