M6 Junctions 21A-27 and M62 Junction 10 - Temporary Restrictions and Prohibitions Due To Upgrades
What is happening?

THE M6 MOTORWAY (JUNCTIONS 21A-27 NORTHBOUND & SOUTHBOUND CARRIAGEWAYS & SLIP & LINK ROADS) & M62 (LINK ROADS) & A580 TRUNK ROAD
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2024
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 09346363) intends to make an Order on the M6 and M62 Motorways, and A580 Trunk Road, in the Boroughs of St Helens, Warrington and Wigan, in the Counties of Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, to enable works associated with an upgrade scheme; to be carried out in safety.
The Order will:
a) impose a 40, 50 or 60 mph speed limit on the following sections of the M6 Motorway:
i. the northbound carriageway, from the Manchester Road Bridge at J21, to the Crow Orchard Road Bridge at J27;
ii. the southbound carriageway, from the Crow Orchard Road Bridge at J27, to the Manchester Road Bridge at J21.
b) ban all traffic from the following sections of the M6 and M62 Motorways and A580 Trunk Road:
i. the M6 northbound carriageway, from a point 600 metres south of the M62 Hop Pole Bridge at J21a, to a point 510 metres south of the A577 Orrell Road Bridge at J26;
ii. the M6 southbound carriageway, from a point 510 metres north of the A577 Orrell Road Bridge at J26, to a point 1,700 meters south of the M62 Hop Pole Bridge at J21a;
iii. the A580 eastbound carriageway, from a point 100 metres west of the M6 overbridge, to a point 100 metres east of the M6 overbridge;
iv. the M6 northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at J22, J23 and J26;
v. the M6 northbound entry slip road at J24;
vi. the M6 southbound exit slip road at J24;
vii. the M6 northbound exit slip road at J25;
viii. the M6 southbound entry slip road at J25;
ix. the M6 northbound to M62 eastbound link road (at M6 J21a);
x. the M6 northbound to M62 westbound link road (at M6 J21a);
xi. the M62 eastbound to M6 northbound link road (at M62 J10);
xii. the M62 westbound to M6 northbound link road (at M62 J10);
xiii. the M6 southbound to M62 eastbound link road (at M6 J21a);
xiv. the M6 southbound to M62 westbound; link road (at M6 J21a);
xv. the M62 eastbound to M6 southbound link road (at M62 J10);
xvi. the M62 westbound to M6 southbound link road (at M62 J10).
c) allow the hard shoulders adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described at a) i-ii to be used as running lanes. A 40, 50 or 60 miles per hour speed limit will be in force on the hard shoulder when being used as a running lane.
d) impose width restrictions on the following sections of the M6 Motorway:
i. of 3.25 metres (10 feet 7 inches) in lane 1, as indicated by traffic signs on the section of carriageway described at a) i;
ii. of 2.75 metres (9 feet 0 inches) in lanes 2, 3 and 4 as indicated by traffic signs on the section of carriageway described at a) i;
iii. of 3.25 metres (10 feet 7 inches) in lane 1, as indicated by traffic signs on the section of carriageway described at a) ii;
iv. of 2.75 metres (9 feet 0 inches) in lane 2, 3 and 4 as indicated by traffic signs on the section of carriageway described at a) ii.
Restrictions a), c) and d) are expected to be in place during a continuous period, subject to traffic signs, starting at 06:00 on Monday 8 April 2024 and ending at 07:00 on Friday 7 November 2025. Prohibition b) is expected to be in place overnight between 20:00 and 07:00 during a period starting on Monday 8 April 2024 and ending on Friday 7 November 2025.
However, works may start and continue between the same times on subsequent nights, or during subsequent continuous periods, until completed.
Diversion routes via alternative junctions of the M6 and M62 Motorways, A580 Trunk Road and local roads will be well signed. The restrictions will not apply to emergency services or special-forces vehicles and the prohibitions will not apply to emergency services, works, winter maintenance or traffic officer vehicles. The restrictions and prohibitions will only apply during such times and to such extent as shall, from time to time, be indicated by traffic signs. The Order comes into force on 7 April 2024 and is valid until 7 November 2025. National Highways is satisfied that the execution of the works will take longer than a period of eighteen months.
