What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14
THE A1(M) MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 58 TO JUNCTION 59) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited has made an Order on the A1(M) Motorway, in County Durham, to enable bridge and carriageway repair works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start on Monday 18 March 2024 for 3 months, or until completed. The effect of the Order will be, at times during the works, between 8pm and 6am, to close the A1(M):
(i) northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 58 (Burtree) to the entry slip road at Junction 59 (Aycliffe), a distance of 4300 metres;
(ii) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 59 to the entry slip road at Junction 58, a distance of 4490 metres;
(iii) northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 59; and
(iv) northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at Junction 58.
During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times. It will be necessary, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1(M):
(v) northbound carriageway from 800 metres south of the exit slip road at Junction 58 to the entry slip road at Junction 59, a distance of 5100 metres;
(vi) southbound carriageway from 715 metres north of the exit slip road at Junction 59 to the entry slip road at Junction 58, a distance of 5290 metres; and
(vii) slip roads mentioned above in (iii) and (iv).
It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day, a times during the works, to close the A1(M)/A167 Aycliffe Roundabout.
Traffic signs will be in place 24 hours a day and indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency services vehicles, traffic officer vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance purposes). The Order comes into force on 17 March 2024 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
