What is happening?

Kent County Council, acting in exercise of its powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, makes or intends to make the following Orders.

CANTERBURY & SWALE AREAS

A299 Thanet Way, Whitstable, Herne Bay & Chestfield.​ (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING & TEMPORARY 50 MPH & 40 MPH SPEED RESTRICTIONS) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2024

To undertake reconstruction and adjustments to the Chestfield tunnel crossover points prior to the installation of a contra-flow traffic management system, Kent County Council has made an Order prohibiting through traffic and restricting speeds on the A299 Thanet Way, Whitstable, Herne Bay and Chestfield, on or after 11th March 2024, with estimated completion by 28 March 2024, or until the works have been completed.

Temporary mandatory 50mph and 40 mph speed restrictions will be imposed at all times on the A299 Thanet Way (Whitstable, Herne Bay and Chestfield) from 11th March 2024, with an estimated completion by 28th March 2024.

Temporary mandatory 50mph and 40mph speed restrictions will be imposed in both directions for a distance of 1500 metres on either side of the entrances to Chestfield tunnel, and to the actual extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.

It will also be necessary to prohibit traffic movements. The A299 Thanet Way (Whitstable, Herne Bay & Chestfield) will be closed in both directions between the hours of 20.00 and 06.00 from 11th March 2024 until 28th March 2024, when the appropriate signage is displayed on site.

It will also be necessary to implement lane 2 closures in both directions between the hours of 06.00 and 20.00 from 11th March 2024 until 28th March 2024 to maintain a safe environment for passing traffic.

The alternative route for coast bound traffic is via the A2990 Thanet Way slip way, A2990 Thanet Way, A291 Canterbury Road and A299 Eddington on slip.

The alternative route for London bound traffic is via the A299 Eddington off slip, A291 Canterbury Road, A2990 Thanet Way, A290 Clapham Hill and A299 Whitstable on slip.
