Charing Cross Road - Temporary Road Closure
What is happening?
CITY OF WESTMINSTER
CHARING CROSS ROAD, GREAT NEWPORT
STREET AND LITTLE NEWPORT STREET
1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Westminster City
Council proposes to make the following Orders
under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of
Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984,
as amended:
• The City of Westminster (Free Parking Places)
(Disabled Permit Parking Places) (Amendment
No. *) Order 202*;
• The City of Westminster (Loading Bays)
(Amendment No. *) Order 202*;
• The City of Westminster (Motorcycle Parking
Places) (Amendment No. *) Order 202*;
• The City of Westminster (Parking Places) (G Zone)
(Amendment No. *) Order 202*; and
• The City of Westminster (Waiting and Loading
Restriction) (Amendment No. *) Order 202*.
2. The general effect of the Orders would be to:
(a) Charing Cross Road:
(i) shorten the double yellow line “at any time”
waiting and loading restrictions on the east
side, adjacent to the Angus Steakhouse,
No. 20 Cranbourn Street by 5.3 metres;
(ii) introduce double yellow line “at any time”
waiting restrictions on the east side, outside
The Porcupine, No. 48;
(iii) introduce “at any time” loading restrictions on
the east side, at its junction with Great Newport
Street, extending northward to the south side
of the gated entrance to Sandringham Flats
(replacing the existing 8.30 a.m. to midnight
loading restrictions); and
(iv) introduce “at any time” loading restrictions on
the west side, extending northward from its
junction with Little Newport Street to opposite
the gated entrance to Sandringham Flats
(replacing the existing 8.30 a.m. to midnight
loading restrictions);
(b) Great Newport Street:
(i) relocate the pay-by-phone parking place
outside Nos. 6 to 7 and No. 8 eastward by
1.8 metres;
(ii) relocate the residents’ parking place outside
Nos. 9 to 12 eastward by 1.8 metres and
shorten it by 2.7 metres;
(iii) relocate the “White Badge” disabled person’s
personal parking bay outside No. 13 eastward
by 5.3 metres;
(iv) shorten the motorcycle parking place on the
south side, opposite No. 5 and Nos. 6 to 7,
by 2.6 metres; and
(ii) introduce “at any time” loading restrictions
on both sides, at its junction with Charing
Cross Road (replacing the existing 8.30 a.m.
to midnight loading restrictions);
(c) on the south side of Little Newport Street:
(i) shorten the loading bay outside the
Hippodrome, Cranbourn Street, by 2.6 metres
at its eastern end; and
(ii) extend the “at any time” loading restrictions
at its junction with Charing Cross Road
westward by 3.5 metres.
Please note that Bus Stop J and its associated clearway
marking outside the entrance / exit to Leicester Square
Underground Station, on Charing Cross Road, would
be relocated southward by 5.2 metres and shortened
by 1.9 metres.
3. The proposed Orders and other documents giving
more detailed particulars of the Orders are available
for inspection until six weeks have elapsed from
the date on which either the Orders are made or
the Council decides not to make the Orders at

and, in person by appointment only, at Westminster
City Hall, 64 Victoria Street, London, SW1E 6QP,
between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays
(except bank / public holidays). Please telephone

5. Any objections or other representations about the
proposal should be sent in writing to the Council’s
agents, WSP Traffic Order Team, 3rd Floor,
WSP House, 70 Chancery Lane, London, WC2A 1AF,
or by email to tmo.westminster@wsp.com quoting
reference 8045/CM by 20th March 2024. All
objections must specify the grounds on which they
are made.
