What is happening?
CITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE (CHINESE NEW YEAR 2024)
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2024
1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on 8th February 2024 the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne made an Order under Section 16a of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to prohibit all vehicles from proceeding on -
(a) Blackett Street - from Pilgrim Street westwards for 343 metres,
(b) Percy Street - from Gallowgate northwards for 70 metres,
(c) Gallowgate - from Newgate Street and Percy Street westwards for 249 metres to St James’ Boulevard,
(d) St Andrews Street, for its entire length,
(e) Stowell Street, for its entire length,
(f) Friars Street, for its entire length,
(g) Monk Street, for its entire length,
(h) Dispensary Lane, for its entire length,
(i) Low Friars Street, for its entire length,
(j) Fenkle Street, from Clayton Street north westwards for 62 metres,
(k) Charlotte Square, for its entire length,
(l) Cross Street, for its entire length,
(m) Blackfriars Court, for its entire length,
(n) West Walls, for its entire length,
(o) Bath Lane from St James’ Boulevard southwards for 195 metres to Westgate Road,
(p) Rutherford Street, for its entire length.
2. The alternative route for vehicles will be via the existing road network.
3. The Order is required to facilitate the ‘Chinese New Year 2024’ (‘the Event’), to enable members of the public to watch the Event and to reduce the disruption to traffic likely to be caused by the Event. The Order is required to allow the Event to be carried out safely on or near the highway and to ensure the health and safety of the general public.
4. Exemptions will be provided for vehicles associated with the Event.
5. The Order will come into operation on 11th February 2024 and will continue, as and when the relevant traffic signs are displayed, for 1 day. The roads will be closed from approximately 10am and will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.
