M11 Motorway - Prohibition Of Traffic For Carriageway Resurfacing Works
What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14(1)(a) AND (7) AND PARAGRAPH 27(1) OF SCHEDULE 9
THE M11 MOTORWAY (NORTH OF JUNCTION 6 TO JUNCTION 14) AND THE A120 (THREMHALL AVENUE, STANSTED, ESSEX) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2024
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited(a) has made an Order on the M11 Motorway in Essex and Cambridgeshire, and the A120 Trunk Road at Stansted in Essex, to allow for third party improvement works at M11 Junction 8, carriageway resurfacing, gantry installations, vehicle safety fence installation, arboriculture works and general routine maintenance to be carried out in safety.
The works will be carried out in phases and are expected to last for approximately 2 months (8pm-6am) continuing on or after Monday 5 February 2024.
The effect of the Order will be to –
1. Impose for 24 hours daily, a speed limit of –
1.1 50 miles per hour on the M11 –
• northbound carriageway from a point 3000 metres south of the J7 exit slip road to a point 5000 metres north of the J8 entry slip road,
• southbound carriageway from a point 3000 metres north of the J9 exit slip road to a point 2000 metres south of the J7 entry slip road, and
• northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Junctions 7, 7A and 8.
1.2 40 miles per hour on the –
• circulatory carriageway of Birchanger Roundabout at M11 J8, and
• eastbound and westbound carriageways of the A120 Thremhall Avenue, between Birchanger Roundabout and Priory Wood Roundabout, Stansted.
2. Close the-
2.1 M11 -
• northbound between J7 and J14,
• southbound between J10 and J7, and • exit and entry slip roads within those lengths.
2.2 roads that link the –
• westbound carriageway of the A120 at M11 J8a to the southbound carriageway of the M11 at J8
• northbound carriageway of the M11 at Junction 9 with the northbound carriageway of the M11 at Junction 9a, and
• southbound carriageway of the M11 from Junction 9a to the southbound carriageway of the M11 at Junction 9, and
2.3 A120 eastbound carriageway, Thremhall Avenue, between its junctions with M11 J8 Birchanger Roundabout and Priory Wood Roundabout.
Diversions:
M11 –
• J10 to J14 – via A505, A11 and A14,
• J7 to J8 – northbound via A414, A1184, and A120, southbound vice versa,
• J7A to J8 – northbound via A1025, A414, A1184 and A120, southbound vice versa,
• J8 to J9 – northbound via A120, A10 and A505, southbound vice versa,
• northbound exit slip road at J8 – via J8A, Priory Wood Roundabout and A120 Thremhall Avenue,
• southbound exit slip road at J8 – continue south to exit at J7A then return northbound to J8,
M11 Birchanger Roundabout –
• northern overbridge – via northbound carriageway to exit at J9A then return southbound to J8,
• non-motorway traffic will be diverted via A120, B1383, Forest Hall Road, Church Road, Bury Lodge Lane, Round Coppice Road, Priory Wood Roundabout, A120 Thremhall Avenue, and
• J8 exit slip and Birchanger Roundabout southern overbridge – via J8A, Round Coppice Road, Bury Lodge Lane, Church Road, Chapel Hill, B1383 and A120, A120 –
• westbound to M11 southbound link road at J8 – via A120 Thremhall Avenue westbound to Birchanger Roundabout then via the M11 SB entry slip road, and
• eastbound A120 Thremhall Avenue between Birchanger Roundabout and Priory Wood Roundabout – via the B1256 eastbound to Dunmow West Interchange then A120 westbound back to Priory Wood Roundabout.
During the M11 J8 improvement works access from Birchanger Roundabout to the service area will be restricted at times.
The temporary mandatory speed limits (which will not apply to emergency service or special force vehicles), closures (which will not apply to emergency service, traffic officer, works or winter maintenance vehicles) and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs.
The Order will come into force on 5 February 2024 and may continue in force until the works detailed above have been completed, or for a maximum duration of eighteen months, whichever is the earlier.
