What is happening?
NATIONAL HIGHWAYS
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14
THE M1 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 45 TO JUNCTION 48) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the M1 Motorway and the A1(M) Motorway, in the Districts of Leeds and Wakefield, to enable structural assessments, surveys and works, barrier removal and installation, lighting removal and installation, cable and ducts removal and installation, earthworks, drainage, and outlet works, resurfacing and white lining works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 00:01 on Friday 1 March 2024 for 11 months, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the M1 northbound:
(i) carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 45 (East Leeds Link) to its merge with the A1(M) northbound carriageway at Hook Moor (M1 Junction 48, A1(M) Junction 43), a distance of 12826 metres:
(ii) entry slip road at Junction 45;
(iii) exit and entry slip roads at Junction 46; and (iv) exit and entry slip roads at Junction 47.
It will be necessary to close between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, the length of carriageway and slip roads described above. During the closures, suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.
It will also be necessary to, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to;
(i) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6’6” in specified lanes of the length of carriageway described above; and
(ii) use the hard shoulder for traffic adjacent to the length of carriageway described above. Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 29 February 2024 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
