Junction 59, Temporary Restrictions & Prohibitions Due To Concrete Repair Works

THE A1(M) MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 59) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1(M) Motorway, in County Durham, to enable concrete repair works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Monday 29 January 2024 for 1 months, or until completed. The effect of the Order will be, at times during the works, between 8pm and 6am, between, to:

(i) close the A1(M) northbound carriageway between the exit slip road at Junction 58 to the entry slip road at Junction 59, a distance of 4300 metres;

(ii) close the A1(M) southbound carriageway between the exit slip road at Junction 59 to the entry slip road at Junction 58, a distance of 4490 metres;

(iii) close the A1(M)/A167 circulatory carriageway;

(iv) close the A1(M) northbound carriageway between the exit and the entry slip roads at Junction 59, a distance of 704 metres;

(v) close the A1(M) northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 59; and

(vi) close the A1(M) northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at Junction 58.

During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times. It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day, to impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1(M):

(i) northbound carriageway from 800 metres south of the exit slip road at junction 58 to the entry slip road at Junction 59, a distance of 5100 metres;

(ii) southbound carriageway from 715 metres north of the exit slip road at Junction 59 to the entry slip road at Junction 58;

(iii) northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at Junction 59; and

(iv) northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at Junction 58.

Traffic signs will be in place 24 hours a day and indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency services vehicles, traffic officer vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance purposes). The Order comes into force on 28 January 2024 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months. The project manager for this scheme is Ted Chamberlain.
