M3 MOTORWAY (JUNCTIONS 2 TO 14) AND A34 & A303 TRUNK ROADS

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways has made an Order on the M3 Motorway in the Counties of Surrey and Hampshire, the A34 Trunk Road in the Counties of Hampshire and Oxfordshire, and the Unitary Authority of West Berkshire, and the A303 Trunk Road in the County of Hampshire and the Unitary Authority of Wiltshire, under Sections 14(1)(a), 14(1)(c) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road.

The effect of the Order is to: -

1. authorise the overnight closure, in sections, of-

(a) both carriageways of the M3 between Junction 2 (M25 Junction 12) and Junction 14 (M27 Junction 4), and all the slip and link roads leading to and from those carriageways;

(b) the circulatory systems at Junction 6 (Black Dam spur road), Junction 9 (A34) and Junction 12 (A335);

(c) the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in (a) above; and

(d) any emergency refuge area adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in (a) above.

2. authorise the overnight hard shoulder running adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in 1. (a) above.

3. permit HGVs in the outside lane of the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above, during inside-lane closures.

4. authorise the overnight closure of –

(a) both carriageways of the A303 between its junction with the M3 at Junction 8 and Parkhouse Cross (A338);

(b) both carriageways of the A34 between the roundabout at M3 Junction 9 and the roundabout at M40 Junction 9;

(c) all the slip and link roads leading to and from the carriageways described in 4. (a) and (b) above;

(d) any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) and (b) above; and

(e) any lay-by or bus stop adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a) and (b) above.

These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and M3, A34 and A303 project works.

The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 2nd January 2024.

Overnight closures on the M3 and connecting roads between Junction 2 and 14, and the A34 and A303 will take place between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).

Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures.

The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2024 and remain in force until 24th December 2024.

Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted via other junctions of the M3, A303 and A34, and by using the M4, M25, M27, A27, A30, A31, A33, A34, A272, A287, A303, A308, A322, A327, A331, A335, A338, A339, A342, A343, A418, A432, A3026, A3057, A3090, A3093, A4183, B3040, B3041, B3049, B3084, B3335, B3349, B3420 and the B4640 as appropriate. The diversion route in operation will vary according to the closure in force. The diversion roads listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions.

The temporary closures, hard shoulder and HGV outside lane running and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
